Summary

This position is located in the Interpretation & Education Division.

Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work from approximately July through May, and you will be in a non-pay status for four weeks in June.

Major Duties-

  • Engage the public through presenting a series of formal structured programs (e.g., walks, talks, tours, presentations, demonstrations, events, virtual interactions) of limited complexity and/or recurring nature, and through informal contacts/conversations with the public.
  • Present established curriculum-based education and distance learning programs for diverse audiences that range from K-8 on-site (in the park) and off-site (classroom and community), and other youth group organizations.
  • Use appropriate education standards and techniques and practices safety procedures to ensure participant safety.
  • Deliver standardized in-park, off-site, and/or virtual education programs.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with organizations (e.g., academic and cultural institutions, state and local government agencies, special interest/user groups).
  • Represent the park in community events and activities.
GS 07/09
  • Collaborate and communicate with teacher, educators, park staff (frontline and other divisions), park partners, other youth organizations, and non-profit organizations from Maui County and visiting schools from other counties in Hawai'i to schedule curriculum-based programming.
  • Presents new curriculum-based education and distance learning programs for diverse audiences that range from K-8 on-site (in the park) and off-site (classroom and community), and other youth group organizations.
  • May develop/deliver standardized in-park, off-site, and/or virtual education programs that clearly tie NPS resources to education standards (national, state, and local) and/or are aligned with needs of educational organizations and their students.
  • Train park staff (frontline and other divisions), interns, and volunteers to assist in preparing and presenting curriculum-based education and distance learning programs and activities, engagement of students, and safety practices.
  • Coordinate specific phases or limited components of special projects (e.g., special events, youth initiatives, teacher workshops, regional or national committees). Collect and/or review data for inclusion in project plans. Provide assistance in resolving recurring problems.
GS 09
  • Includes data gathered from presented projects in new project plans.
  • Provide assistance in resolving recurring problems.
  • Organize and present training workshops for teachers, educators, park partners, and other youth organizations to prepare them for field trip logistics, to conduct pre and post visit activities, to support the National Park Service and the park's interpretation themes, and to promote stewardship of the park's cultural and natural resources.

Physical Demands-
The work requires some physical exertion and can involve extensive periods of standing and walking, in some cases over rough surfaces or inclines outdoors and carrying backpacks, tools, resource equipment, or other loads.

Work Environment-
The work can include moderate risks or discomforts that require safety precautions (e.g., high elevation, exposure to extreme temperatures, climates, rough terrain, wild animals, pests, and/or insects). The incumbent may be required to use protective clothing or gear, such as masks, boots, gloves, etc.

Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level.

You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You will be required to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • If you are a new employee in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • You will be required to travel occasionally to sites where programs are provided.
  • Travel, transportation & relocation expenses will not be paid. Relocation expenses will be the employee's responsibility.
  • Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by 11:59 PM (EST) when the applicant limit is reached which may be before the closing date of this announcement-07/01/2024-.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.

SELECTIVE FACTOR: This position requires that the incumbent has experience through life experience or education to build trust with Native Hawaiian communities; has practiced knowledge and experience relating to the historical impact on native communities; and/or has experience working on-site and within Native Hawaiian cultural and natural resources through use of the native language, 'Olelo Hawai'i (Hawaiian Language). Candidates who do not meet this requirement by close of this announcement will receive no further consideration for this position. You must provide a certificate, transcript or proof of experience in your resume in order to be considered as eligible. Resume must include hours/week worked.

To qualify for this position at the GS-05 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 level in the federal service which is in or related to the position to be filled and which provided the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of a park guide or tour leader and knowledge of and/or experience with Native Hawaiian culture, resources, and history. This experience includes assisting with activities such as presenting programs or traditional practices in 'Olelo Hawai'i and English with Hawaiian communities and immersion schools, and youth groups. You must provide a resume. which includes hours/week worked.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with a major study which includes 24 semester hours of related course work. Major study may include natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. You must include transcripts.

Successful completion of a combination of specialized experience and education, as described above, that when combined equal at least 100% of the minimum qualification requirement for the GS-05 grade level. NOTE: Only progressive education more than the first 2 years (above 60 semester hours or equivalent) is creditable when combining. You must provide transcripts and a resume which includes hours/week worked.

To qualify for this position at the GS-07 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal Service obtained in either the public or private sectors (Note: one grade interval work such as guide, clerk, assistant, or technician work in a single grade occupational series at the GS-05 level does NOT qualify for this position, however GS-06 level may). Specialized experience includes the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of a park guide or tour leader, experience with and/or knowledge of Native Hawaiian culture, resources, and history, including activities such as leading in presentation of programs or traditional practices in 'Olelo Hawai'i and English with Hawaiian communities and immersion schools, and youth groups. You must provide a resume which includes hours/week worked.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least one year of graduate-level education in a related field appropriate to the position, such as natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and interpretation of natural and cultural resources. Course work in fields other than those specified may be accepted if it clearly provides applicants with the background of knowledge and skills necessary for successful job performance in the position to be filled. EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least two full academic years of progressively higher-level graduate education OR a master's/equivalent graduate degree related to the occupation in a field such as natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and interpretation of natural and cultural resources. To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.
