The incumbent serves as a Fish Biologist, Red Bluff Fish and Wildlife Office. The successful candidate will conduct research on the anadromous salmonids of the Sacramento River, collecting and analyzing biological data to monitor, assess, and guide the operation of Federal fish hatcheries to achieve goals of conservation and harvest augmentation.
Summary
The incumbent serves as a Fish Biologist, Red Bluff Fish and Wildlife Office. The successful candidate will conduct research on the anadromous salmonids of the Sacramento River, collecting and analyzing biological data to monitor, assess, and guide the operation of Federal fish hatcheries to achieve goals of conservation and harvest augmentation.
This position will be filled under the Office of Personnel Management's Direct Hire Authority and is open to all United States citizens and U.S. nationals. As a Fish Biologist your duties will include but are not limited to the following:
Develops and reviews comprehensive hatchery and fishery management plans and coordinates with other fishery programs that effect biological resources including, but not limited to: fish culture, hatchery quality control, fishery management assistance, sampling for exotic species, assessing fish populations, and recommending habitat restoration/management.
Plans and conducts a variety of complex investigations including the design, collection, and analysis of biological data pertaining to species reared and released from National Fish Hatcheries in the assigned area.
Maintains a high level of technical skill and knowledge necessary to ensure that recommendations for the hatchery/station/center biological program are consistent with current published literature and other professionally endorsed practices.
Uses analytical techniques to design studies and interpret results for hatchery evaluations and evaluations of ecological interactions between hatchery and wild fish populations.
Prepares reports on progress and completion of activities and formulates recommendations that guide future programs and influences the improvements in hatchery/management/fish health practices.

Qualifications
Only experience and education obtained by 06/28/2024 will be considered.
In order to qualify for this position you must possess both the Basic Requirement and Minimum Qualification.
Basic Requirement:
Possess a degree in biological science that included (a) at least 6 semester hours in aquatic subjects such as limnology, ichthyology, fishery biology, aquatic botany, aquatic fauna, oceanography, fish culture, or related courses in the field of fishery biology; AND (b) at least 12 semester hours in the animal sciences in such subjects as general zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, entomology, parasitology, ecology, cellular biology, genetics, or research in these fields. (Excess course work in aquatic subjects may be used to meet this requirement when appropriate.); OR
Possess a combination of education and experience that included courses equivalent to a major in biological science (i.e., at least 30 semester hours), of which a minimum of 6 semester hours were in aquatic subjects and 12 semester hours were in the animal sciences, as shown in above, PLUS appropriate experience or additional education. This combination of education and experience is comparable to successful completion of a full 4-year course of study as described above.
Minimum Qualification GS-11
One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal Service performing the following duties: Conducting fishery research and monitoring; providing guidance and direction in the collection of biological data samples; analyzing fisheries data (such as population estimates, fishery harvest, run timing estimates, etc.) using quantitative statistics or modelling; writing reports and giving presentations that summarize results for scientific audiences, government agencies, tribes, as well as the public; and coordinating activities with other fisheries agencies and offices. NOTE: Your resume must contain sufficient information in these areas to be found qualified; OR
Completed three full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or equivalent doctoral degree in a field directly related to fishery biology such as limnology, ichthyology, fishery biology, aquatic botany, aquatic fauna, oceanography, fish culture, fish and wildlife management, marine science, or other fields directly related to fishery biology; OR
A combination of education and experience as described in 1 and 2 above which together equals 100% of the requirement
