Duties

Help

As a Interdisciplinary - Electronics Eng/Mechanical Eng/General Engineer/Computer Eng/Computer Science at the GS-0801/0830/0854/0855/1550-11/12/13 some of your typical work assignments may include:

  • Develops and implements Instrumentation plans to facilitate R&D Testing and Evaluation which involve the development and deployment of diagnostics systems employed in a broad range of applications. Systems include high speed data acquisition systems and sensors, high speed video, and environmental measurements (i.e. pressure, temperature, displacement).
  • Plans and implements changes to instrumentation plans following technical discussions with the Test Team and senior engineers. Integrates project modifications identified during test team meetings, and provides directives to instrumentation support contractor personnel regarding policies, procedures, and diagnostics plan implementation.
  • Oversees instrumentation contractor personnel involved in the design, installation, maintenance, and operational checkout of Digital High Speed Camera System, Digital Radio (Microwave/Fiber Optic/Wireless) Transmission System, the Data Acquisition System(DAS), and its associated subsystems. Oversees installation and testing assignments and reviews contractor work based upon priorities and deadlines of the specific weapons effects tests. Informs contractor personnel of performance expectations, advises them as necessary of changes and progress to meet demanding schedule requirements.
  • Makes broad work assignments to team personnel in terms of general objectives, relative priorities, and overall policy when it pertains to all instrumentation activities in remote locations and internal projects.
  • Responsible for monitoring overall cost and schedule for assigned test projects. Additionally, will be responsible for ensuring that all diagnostics systems have undergone appropriate calibration and maintenance.

Qualifications

You may qualify at the GS 13, if you fulfill the following qualifications:

A. One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service as listed below:

  • Expert knowledge in engineering and scientific background in order to effectively conduct research into all aspects of WMD testing. Measurements include: motion measurements (acceleration, velocity, displacement), force/strain/stress measurements, thermal measurements (temperature, thermal flux, IR spectrum camera). In addition, measurements also include: radiation measurement (radiological detectors), optical measurement (high-speed cameras), power monitoring (current and voltage probe), RF measurements (EM antenna, magnetometer), seismic/acoustic measurements (infrasound, seismometer, geophone, triaxial accelerometer), and pressure measurements.
  • Expert knowledge in computer programming languages (i.e. C++, Javascript, Python) in order to create an instrumentation system resulting in the acquisition of data fulfilling the test measurement requirements.
  • Expert knowledge and understanding of the components, subsystems, and assigned electronics systems as well as a good working knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems ancillary to or supporting the equipment to develop and implement instrumentation plans and to oversee technical instrumentation contractor personnel involved in the design, installation, maintenance, and operational checkout of various instrumentation systems.
You may qualify at the GS 12, if you fulfill the following qualifications:

A. One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service as listed below:
  • Incumbent is responsible for developing instrumentation plans and overseeing the installation, maintenance, and operation of various instrumentation systems in support of complex high explosives weapons effects tests.
  • The duties and responsibilities of this position are essentially the same as those on the GS-13 except the incumbent is under closer supervision, receives more detailed instructions, and stricter guidelines are in place.
You may qualify at the GS 11, if you fulfill the following qualifications:

A. One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service as listed below:
  • Comprehensive knowledge in engineering and scientific background in order to effectively develop instrumentation plan for DoD Research & Development test programs. Measurements include: motion measurements (acceleration, velocity, displacement), force/strain/stress measurements, thermal measurements (temperature, thermal flux, IR spectrum camera). In addition, measurements also include: radiation measurement (radiological detectors), optical measurement (high-speed cameras), power monitoring (current and voltage probe), RF measurements (EM antenna, magnetometer), seismic/acoustic measurements (infrasound, seismometer, geophone, triaxial accelerometer), and pressure measurements.
  • Comprehensive knowledge in basic computer programming languages (i.e. C++, Javascript, Python) in order to create an instrumentation system resulting in the acquisition of data fulfilling the test measurement requirements.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the components, subsystems, and assigned electronics systems as well as a good working knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems ancillary to or supporting the equipment to develop and implement instrumentation plans and to oversee technical instrumentation contractor personnel involved in the design, installation, maintenance, and operational checkout of various instrumentation systems.

In addition to meeting qualifications, your application package must reflect the applicable experience to meet the Individual Occupational Requirements for the 0801/0830/0854/0855/1550, series as listed below:
Engineering Series. To be acceptable, the program must: lead to a bachelor's degree in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by ABET; or include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics. OR Combination of education and experience -- college-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering, and a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering. The adequacy of such background must be demonstrated by one of the following: 1. Professional registration or licensure Current registration as an Engineer Intern, Engineer in Training 1, or licensure as a Professional Engineer by any State. Absent other means of qualifying under this standard, those applicants who achieved such registration by means other than written test (e.g., State grandfather or eminence provisions) are eligible only for positions that are within or closely related to the specialty field of their registration. Evidence of having successfully passed the Fundamentals of Engineering 2 examination or any other written test required for professional registration by an engineering licensure board in the various States, the District of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto Rico. Successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences and that included the courses specified in the basic requirements under paragraph A. The courses must be fully acceptable toward meeting the requirements of an engineering program as described in paragraph A. Related curriculum -- Successful completion of a curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in an appropriate scientific field, e.g., engineering technology, physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, or geology, may be accepted in lieu of a bachelor's degree in engineering, provided the applicant has had at least 1 year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and guidance.

Computer Science Series This series includes professional positions which primarily involve the application of, or research into, computer science methods and techniques to store, manipulate, transform or present information by means of computer systems. The primary requirements of the work are (a) professional competence in applying the theoretical foundations of computer science, including computer system architecture and system software organization, the representation and transformation of information structures, and the theoretical models for such representations and transformations; (b) specialized knowledge of the design characteristics, limitations, and potential applications of systems having the ability to transform information, and of broad areas of applications of computing which have common structures, processes, and techniques; and (c) knowledge of relevant mathematical and statistical sciences.

Bachelor's degree in computer science or bachelor's degree with 30 semester hours in a combination of mathematics, statistics, and computer science. At least 15 of the 30 semester hours must have included any combination of statistics and mathematics that included differential and integral calculus. All academic degrees and course work must be from accredited or pre-accredited institutions.
