Help

  • Begins the initiation of a thorough pre-op evaluation of the patient scheduled for a surgical, non-surgical or diagnostic procedure. Reviews and interprets data from various sources. Collaborates with other members of the surgical team as well as other providers throughout the evaluation period to coordinate care of the patient.
  • Obtains lab specimens ordered by the provider or as appropriate in our current standing orders; will obtain an EKG, based upon the provider's order or the standing orders; operates an EKG monitor and the cardiac vital sign monitor.
  • Teaches the patient and family about what to expect the day of surgery. Explains the importance of preventing surgical site infections and teaches the patient about the CHG baths. In the absences of physician, the nurse independently determines and implements proper emergency measures. Administers therapeutic interventions, such as medication, treatments, intravenous fluids, blood product transfusions, oral/nasogastric tubes, chest tubes, airway insertion, oxygen therapy and other diagnostic interventions, etc.
  • Reviews the surgical schedule daily and then communicates with other surgical services providers
  • Collaborates in developing and evaluating standards of care for the perioperative patient. Participates in planning and conducting continuing education in the department. Identifies specific surgery care problems that affect patient care outcomes and seeks resolution to avoid re-occurrence.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). Basic Requirements for the GS-11 (or equivalent) Grade Level

In addition to the above requirements, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Successful completion of a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree from a professional nursing educational program or related medical science field; or
  • At least one full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-9 grade level) and possession of a diploma, associate degree, bachelor's degree, or master's degree from a professional nursing educational program.Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Has provided comprehensive nursing care in the Operating Room with a full range of professional nursing proficiency and skill to develop an individualized patient perioperative plan of care for Surgery patients; experience independently planning and providing nursing care based on professional nursing practices and medical protocols or guidelines for patients; collaborating with the physicians to develop clinical protocols and guidelines that established standards of care; provided pre-op evaluation for patients by coordinating with the surgical team to meet patient's care goals and ensure compliance of care.

Licensure

For all grade levels and positions, applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination. In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below-

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks:

Additional information

Per IHS policy (SGM 21-04) IHS selectees to positions located in Federally operated hospitals, health centers, and clinics must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 before entry on duty or have IHS approve a medical or religious exemption. Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave.

This position is covered by a Bargaining Unit.
