This position is in the Administration Division and major duties include:

  • Diagnoses and resolves unique, unusual, difficult and complex problems in response to customer reported incidents, providing advice and assistance to minimize interruptions to critical business activities and providing written analysis and guidance to be used when addressing similar problems in the future.
  • Researches, evaluates, and provides feedback on problematic trends and incident and request trends and patterns in customer support requirements, assessing overall customer support effectiveness. Researches, evaluates, and recommends new tools to enhance delivery of customer requirements. Identifies priorities and barriers to recommendations and presents recommendations, in writing or orally, to a variety of stakeholders. Drafts related policy and procedures associated with new tools and approaches and develops implementing guidance.
  • Develops customer support procedures, standards, and performance metrics for the organizations serviced. Drafts, reviews, and provides comments on procedures, standards and metrics from higher levels within the organization.
  • Installs, configures, troubleshoots, and maintains customer hardware and software
  • Provides customer training.
  • Ensures application and accountability of information security/information assurance policies, principles, and practices in the delivery of customer support services
  • Plans and coordinates product and equipment installation and lifecycle upgrades, overseeing and resolving technical and administrative problems, controlling current versions and future releases of hardware and applications software, and documenting the physical configuration of the systems.
  • Optimizes the functionality and performance of systems. Maintains systems integrity and availability anticipating likely capacity or configuration problems and initiating corrective or preventive actions. Diagnoses and recovers failed systems.
  • Maintains and manages all accountable IT Property processes and procedures.

Physical Demands: The work is primarily sedentary; however, supporting shared parks some work will require walking and standing in conjunction with customer site visits, travel, and attendance at meetings and conferences away from the work site. The work may also involve carrying light item, such as papers, books, or small parts; lifting, with assistance, various pieces of IT equipment such as computers, components, and printers; or driving a motor vehicle. The work does not require special physical effort.

  • Occupancy of government quarters is not available.
  • You may be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime.
  • If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 1-2 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes. You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.The position to which you will be appointed is subject to a financial disclosure reporting requirement and you will be required to complete a new entrant Confidential Financial Disclosure Report (OGE Form 450) within 30 days of your appointment.
  • Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

To qualify for this position at the GS-12 grade level, you must possess the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

BASIC EXPERIENCE: Have IT-related experience; experience may be demonstrated by paid or unpaid experience and/or completion of specific, intensive training (i.e., IT certification) and must demonstrate that you meet each of these four competencies:
1)Attention to Detail - Is thorough when performing work and conscientious about attending to detail.
2) Customer Service - Works with clients and customers to assess their needs, provide information or assistance, resolve their problems, or satisfy their expectations; knows about available products and services; is committed to providing quality products and services.
3) Oral Communication - Expresses information to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information; makes clear and convincing oral presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately.
4) Problem solving- Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-11 grade level obtained in either the public or private sectors. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies/knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position and is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Such experience is typically gained in the Information Technology (IT) field or through the performance of work where the primary concern is IT. Specialized experience should include: designing, planning, and implementing complex computer and IP-based communications systems; integrating computer and networking components, such as, databases, servers, switches, software, backup drives, etc.; analyzing systems requirements in response to business requirements, risks, and costs; evaluating; selecting, verifying, and validating systems software and hardware environments; managing IP-based communication systems, multiple local area networks (LANs), and a wide area network (WAN); and installing and configuring point-to-point and microwave network components. VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Additional information

A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected. The display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay.

A Recruitment Incentive May Be Authorized for a newly selected employee when appointed to a permanent, temporary, or term position. A Relocation Incentive May Be Authorized for a Federal employee when the employee must move, as directed by the National Park Service (NPS) either through a management directed reassignment or selection for employment, to a different location at least 50 miles away from the one where his/her position of record held at time of selection is currently located, due to a need of the NPS. A relocation incentive is not the same as a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move and, as such, may be granted in conjunction with one another.

Working Conditions: Work is typically performed in an office setting where typical risks and discomforts that require normal safety precautions occur; however, some work may occur in research facilities or industrial and/or maintenance areas that may require the use of hardhats, hearing protection, or other protective equipment.

The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.
