Duties

Help

Duties at the F-Band Level:

Performs basic but progressively more complex training assignments under the close direction of a supervisor, team leader, or more experienced employee. Acquires and applies basic experience of construction knowledge to complete assignments in support of the National Airspace System (NAS). Assists senior technicians in developing cost estimates for various projects, gathering technical data, and evaluating/formulating safety procedures for assigned projects. Reviews pertinent technical manuals and FAA Orders. Acquires familiarity with National Electric Code (NEC) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards for workplace safety. Gains training and experience in electrical, mechanical, structural, and civil engineering skills in diagnosing, adjusting, modifying, testing, overhauling, demolishing, installing, repairing and servicing plant and structure systems, equipment and component parts. Develops the ability to communicate with a variety of contracts to successfully complete assigned projects. Approximately 95% of the work is performed in travel status at remote locations. Must be able to perform appropriate trades and skills in all types of inclement weather from 120 degrees F to 60 below zero, in rain and snow. Trades and skills are utilized in all projects throughout the Western Service Area.

Duties at the G-Band Level: Includes the above as well as the following:

Applies knowledge of construction and maintenance principles and practices to complete various assignments in support of the National Airspace System (NAS). Utilizes a working knowledge of civil, electrical and mechanical trades to perform hands-on installation site preparation to establish and upgrade NAS facilities in coordination with other government personnel or contract employees. Reads and interprets engineering drawings, specifications and schematics. Works as a team member with other FMP Center employees. Coordinates work with local facility representatives and contractors. Participates in the accomplishment of various technical projects and tasks including but not limited to power, control, coax, or fiber optic cable fault locating, troubleshooting and repairing. Performs engine generator set up, modification, testing, troubleshooting and relocation. Performs routine and varying assignments associated with analyzing, installing, repairing, fabricating or trouble-shooting electronic, electrical and mechanical systems and components. Approximately 95% of the work is performed in travel status at remote locations. Must be able to perform appropriate trades and skills in all types of inclement weather from 120 degrees F to 60 below zero, in rain and snow. Trades and skills are utilized in all projects throughout the Western Service Area.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position at the FV-F level, you must demonstrate in your application that you possess at least one year of specialized experience with six months being specialized in planning and executing construction projects or performing maintenance and/or repair of existing structures, utilizing accepted trade methods and techniques. Experience in a trade or craft may be credited as specialized experience when the work provided intensive knowledge of engineering and/or construction principles, concepts, practices, techniques, methods, and precedents. Up to six months of the work experience may be general work experience if the work demonstrates your ability to perform the duties of this position.

To qualify for this position at the FV-G level, you must demonstrate in your application that you possess at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the FV-F, FG/GS-9 level. This experience is typically related to the line of work of the position to be filled and which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been at least equivalent to the next lower level in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.

Working Conditions of Employment. You must be able to perform efficiently the essential functions of the position without hazard to yourself or others. Work assignments can be physical and strenuous in nature. You may also be required to lift and/or carry objects up to 30 pounds, as well as climb ladders, walking up several flights of stairs, working on elevated surfaces and/or work in unusual or uncomfortable body positions or environmental conditions. Some positions involve work that must be performed outdoors during various weather conditions. There is a potential for shift work, i.e., nights, weekends and rotating shifts. You may be required to travel up to 50% of the time.
