If you are selected for this position under the supervision of the supervisor or experienced RN preceptor your responsibilities will include:

  • Provides direct patient care to research participants.
  • Utilize advanced critical thinking and nursing skills to assess, plan, perform, and evaluate nursing care for individual patients, their families and significant others, who are participants in biomedical research protocols.
  • Provide patient-focused nursing care within the interdisciplinary team and collaborate with team members to create and communicate a plan of care that balances clinical care needs with research needs and allows for safe and effective collection of clinical research data.
  • Exercise the full domain of practice for the specialty of clinical research nursing including providing clinical care to research participants, supporting protocol implementation, data collection, continuity of care, human subject's protection and dissemination of clinical research findings.
  • Accurately document observations, identify trends and important findings, and effectively communicate this information to the multidisciplinary research team and nursing colleagues.

  • Work schedule will include Days/Nights/Weekends/Holidays. May also include 12-hour 10-hour 8-shifts or a combination depending on the unit or clinical area. On-call for the OR may be required upon completion of the residency program.
  • You must be able to lift and move items weighing 35 lbs.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: In order to meet the Basic Qualification Requirements for a Nurse (Clinical Research), GS-0610, you must:
A
. Have a graduate or higher-level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

NOTE: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.

License:

B. Possess a current, active, full and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
AND
C
. You must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) or obtained licensure before the implementation of the NCLEX-RN. Individuals who have not passed the NCLEX-RN, but meet all other qualification requirements will be subject to a comprehensive evaluation of both their education and experience prior to final appointment.

Additional Qualifications for the GS-07 level:

1. Possession of a bachelor's degree in nursing and eligibility under the Superior Academic Achievement provision.

To qualify for the Superior Academic Achievement provision, the applicant must meet one of the requirements for superior academic achievement based on:

a) Graduating within the upper third of the graduating class in a college, university, or major subdivision such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses.
b) Having a grade point average of 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 as recorded on your official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum;
c) Being elected for membership in a national scholastic honor society.
d) Graduated within the top third of your class.

OR
2. Possess a bachelor's degree in nursing, and at least one full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-5 grade level).

OR

3. Possession of a diploma or associate degree in professional nursing and two full years of professional nursing experience at the GS-05 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: performing venipuncture to obtain blood specimens; recording case histories to include taking temperatures, pulse, respiration, height, weight, and blood pressure; testing vision and hearing AND possession of a diploma, associate degree, bachelor's degree, or master's degree from a professional nursing program.

OR

4. Completion of at least one full year of nursing graduate education in a professional nursing educational program.
