As a Student Trainee you will perform essential assignments which include, but are not limited to:

  • Supporting senior level staff with program goals and activities to gain practical work experience that supplements training in academic course of study.
  • Performing administrative/operational duties including, but not limited to researching, locating and gathering information which specifically identified material from various sources for the use of the staff.
  • Checking reports and other documents for correctness and appropriate format; verifying discrepancies with the appropriate office(s) and/or stakeholders.
  • Assisting senior level employees in evaluating assigned program goals; conducting follow-up actions to ensure timely receipt of responses; assembling data; and providing general information.

If selected for this position, you will be required to:

  • Obtain and maintain a Top-Secret Tier 5 clearance. For more information visit OPM Mythbuster Page.
  • Maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 undergraduate; or 3.0 graduate at time of application and throughout internship appointment. 
  • Must be at least 16 years of age by the time of appointment to participate in the program.  
  • Submit to a drug test prior to your appointment and random drug testing while you occupy the position. For more information regarding the U.S. Secret Service drug guidelines please click here to view our Drug Policy. 
  • Certify that you have registered with the Selective Service System or are exempt from having to do so, if you are a male applicant born after December 31, 1959.
  • Sign a Participant Agreement upon entrance on duty.

THIS POSITION IS A TEMPORARY INTERNSHIP WITH AN OPTION TO EXTEND IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE PROVISIONS OUTLINED IN 5 CFR §213.104, AS LONG AS THE INTERN CONTINUES TO MEET THE ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS DESCRIBED IN THIS SECTION AND RECEIVES A POSITIVE RECCOMENDATION AND/OR PERFORMANCE EVALUATION TO JUSTIFY THE EXTENSION FROM HIS/OR SUPERVISOR. 

If you currently hold a federal position in the competitive service and accept this appointment, you will voluntarily relinquish your competitive position. Upon completion of this appointment, you will not be returned to your previous position. 

Qualifications

GS-01: You qualify for the GS-01 level (base starting salary $21,986) if you possess the following: 

  • Enrollment in a high school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) program.

GS-02: You qualify for the GS-02 level (base starting salary $24,722) if you possess the following: 

  • Completion of high school or GED diploma.

GS-03: You qualify for the GS-03 level (base starting salary $25,764) if you possess the following:

  • Completion of 1 full academic year of post-high school study. 

GS-04: You qualify for the GS-04 level (starting salary $28,921) if you possess the following:

  • Completion of 2 full academic years of post-high school study or an Associate's degree.

This will be calculated using your résumé and unofficial transcripts that was submitted with your application.

Students must maintain student eligibility and enrollment throughout the duration of the appointment (Applicants must be actively enrolled at an accredited institution). Applicants that have graduated or will graduate prior to the completion of the program are ineligible to participate without proof of future enrollment in an accredited university.
