This is a temporary position not to exceed 12 weeks or 09/21/2024, whichever comes first. These are not remote positions. Telework may be authorized at manager discretion in alignment with their office policy and work requirements.

What will I do in this position if hired?

We are searching for highly motivated student interns to serve as student trainees where they will have the opportunity to advise on, administer, learn, and/or perform work in one or more of the below career concentrations.

As a Student Trainee, your typical work assignments may include:
  • Establishing and maintaining office files.
  • Receiving incoming calls and visitors.
  • Providing callers and visitors with general information.
  • Preparing a variety of standardized documents from rough draft and/or oral instructions.
  • Processing and distributing mail to appropriate individuals.
  • Developing documents using a variety of office automation applications.
  • Performing special projects.

Every FEMA employee has regular and recurring emergency management responsibilities, though not every position requires routine deployment to disaster sites. All positions are subject to recall around the clock for emergency management operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the official duty station, and may include duties other than those specified in the employee's official position description. Travel requirements in support of emergency operations may be extensive in nature (weeks to months), with little advance notice, and may require employees to relocate to emergency sites with physically austere and operationally challenging conditions.

Qualifications

The qualification requirements listed below must be met by the closing date of this announcement. Students graduating in Spring 2024 who are not accepted or enrolled for a new degree-seeking program after graduation will be rated ineligible.

For qualification purposes, an academic year is computed as follows:

  • To qualify for a Pathways Internship as a GS-03: Students must have completed one full academic year of post-high school study.
  • To qualify for a Pathways Internship as a GS-04: Students must have completed two full academic years of post-high school study or have an associate degree.
  • To qualify for a Pathways Internship as a GS-05: Students must have completed four academic years of post-high school leading to a bachelor's degree or equivalent degree.

To be eligible, you must be currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program or accepted for enrollment on at least a half-time basis in an accredited educational institution for Spring 2024.These institutions include (but are not limited to):

  • College (including 4-year colleges/universities, community college, and junior college)
  • Professional, Technical, Vocational, and Trade School
  • Advanced Degree Program
  • Certificate Program
  • Other qualifying educational institutions
*A note about certificate programs: Certificate programs are defined as post-secondary education in a qualifying educational institute and must be equivalent to at least one academic year of full-time study. The certificate program must also be a part of an accredited college-level, technical, vocational, trade, or business school curriculum.

Education

To be eligible for the Pathways Internship Program, you MUST:

1. Be currently enrolled in an accredited high-school, college (including 4-year colleges/universities, community colleges, and junior colleges) or a professional, technical, vocational, or trade school; advanced degree programs; or other qualifying educational institution pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate on at least half-time basis as determined by the school;
2. Currently have and maintain a Grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 (undergraduate) or 3.0 (graduate) and be in good standing;
3. Provide a copy of your transcripts (unofficial); proof of student status; or a letter on your institution letterhead which provides a list of courses, grades earned, grade point average, completion dates, and quarter or semester hours earned or that you are enrolled in the next available term;
4. Remain enrolled at least half-time to continue to be eligible for the Pathways Internship Program; and
5. If you are graduating after the closing date of this announcement, you must provide documentation of enrollment in another qualifying program to be eligible for this position.

Program Completion and Conversion: This position is eligible for conversion to a permanent or term position. This is not automatic and is at the discretion of the employing office.

Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet Federal qualification requirements if you can show that your foreign education is comparable to education received in accredited educational institutions in the United States. For example, specific courses accepted for college-level credit by an accredited U.S. college or university, or foreign education evaluated by an organization recognized for accreditation by the Department of Education as education equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. college or university.
