The IRS Internship Program offers IRS employees who are current students with an opportunity to work and explore new careers. You must meet the definition of a student during the duration of your internship as follows:

An individual accepted for enrollment or enrolled and seeking a qualifying degree or certificate from one of the following:
  • High school; OR
  • College/university; OR
  • Professional, technical, vocational, or trade school; OR
  • Advanced degree program; OR
  • Certificate in a qualifying and accredited educational institution, on a full or half-time basis (as defined by the institution in which the student is enrolled), including awardees of the Harry S. Truman Foundation Scholarship Program under Public Law 93-842.
Students need not be in actual physical attendance, so long as all other requirements are being met. An individual who needs to complete less than the equivalent of a half-time an academic/vocational or technical course load immediately prior to graduating is still considered a student for purposes of this program.

Every academic term (e.g., semester, quarter, etc), you must maintain good academic standing with an overall GPA of 2.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. An academic year of undergraduate education is defined as 30 semester credit hours, 45 quarter credit hours, or the equivalent in an accredited college or university.

In order to successfully complete the Internship Program, you must complete a minimum of 640 hours of work experience (prior to completing academic program requirements), acquired through the program and successfully complete your course of academic study. If for any reason you do not successfully complete the program, you will be returned to the previous grade of the same or similar position you held within IRS prior to being selected for the Internship Program.

Upon successful completion of the program requirements you may be non-competitively placed in a Criminal Investigator Special Agent, GS-1811, Career Ladder 5/7/9/11/12/13 in one of the division(s) listed below:

The following are the duties of this position at the full working level. If this vacancy includes more than one grade and you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform these duties and receive training to help you grow in this position.
  • The incumbent works with professional Special Agents and assists them in conducting field investigations; searches public records, summarizing canceled checks, identifying flow of funds between depositories, assisting in research of legal questions, assisting in obtaining evidence, etc. In addition, emphasis is given on developing investigative techniques and an understanding of tax law in relation to special agent work, in order to meet the objectives, methods and procedures of the branch.
  • May participate in special projects as part of the training experience.
  • Performs other duties in accordance with a written work study agreement.

  • Telework Eligible Positions: Telework eligible positions do not guarantee telework.   • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National and provide proof of U.S. Citizenship. (Birth certificate showing birth in the U.S; Unexpired U.S. Passport; Certificate of Citizenship or Naturalization; or Report of Birth Abroad of a U.S. Citizen (Form FS-240))
  • All selectees must sign a Participant Agreement.
  • Undergo a review of prior performance/conduct and an income tax verification. Refer to "Get Your Tax Record" at http://www.irs.gov/(https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript) to check the status of your account, balance owed, payment history, make a payment, or review answers to tax questions. If you are not in compliance, you will be determined unsuitable for employment with IRS.
  • Must successfully complete a background investigation, including a FBI criminal history record check (fingerprint check).
  • Complete a Declaration for Federal Employment to determine your suitability for Federal employment, at the time requested by the agency.
  • Go through a Personal Identity Verification (PIV) process that requires two forms of identification from the Form I-9. Federal law requires verification of the identity and employment eligibility of all new hires in the U.S. These documents must be unexpired original or certified copies.

Qualifications

Federal experience is not required. The experience may have been gained in the public sector, private sector or Volunteer Service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-timework is considered on a prorated basis.- To ensure full credit for your work experience, please indicate dates of employment by month/year, and indicate number of hours worked per week, on your resume.

In order to qualify, you must first meet IRS Internship Program eligibility:

The IRS Pathways Internship Program provides Federal employment opportunities to students who are enrolled, or accepted for enrollment, as degree seeking students taking at least a half-time academic, technical, or vocational course load in an accredited, technical, vocational, 2- or 4-year college or university, graduate or professional school, the opportunity to work and explore new careers while in school.

This program provides experience that is directly related to your educational program and career goals. If selected, employees are required to maintain a schedule that includes attendance at an accredited school combined with career related work in the agency. The work experience with the agency MUST be related to your academic/career goals.

If selected, you will be placed in a student trainee position, and upon successfully completing the program requirements you may be non-competitively converted to a term, career or career-conditional appointment. The targeted position has been indicated in the vacancy announcement.

Selectees must remain enrolled in school and maintain a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.0 or higher to remain in the program. Applicants are acknowledging that they understand these requirements with the submission of their application. All conversion requirements will be identified in the Participant Agreement.

After meeting the requirements of the Pathways Internship Program, you may qualify based solely on education, experience, or a combination of both.

You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement:

GS-04 LEVEL: Completion of 2 full academic years of post-high school study or an associate's degree or equivalent degree from among the following or closely related fields: accounting, finance, economics, business law, tax law, or money and banking.

GS-05 LEVEL: Completion of 4 academic years of post-high school leading to a bachelor's degree or equivalent degree from among the following or closely related fields: accounting, finance, economics, business law, tax law, or money and banking.

GS-07 LEVEL: Completion of 1 full academic year of graduate level education; or Eligibility under the Superior Academic Achievement Provision and completion of a bachelor's degree from among the following or closely related fields: accounting, finance, economics, business law, tax law, or money and banking.

You may qualify with a combination of qualifying education and experience.

If converted to a Criminal Investigator, you must be no older than 37 years of age at time of appointment. Possess a valid driver's license. Pass a background and criminal history record check.

In addition to the above, you must meet the definition of a student for the duration of your appointment as follows: An individual accepted for enrollment or enrolled and seeking a degree (high school, college (4-year colleges/universities, community colleges, and junior colleges); professional, technical, vocational, and trade school; advanced degree programs; or other qualifying educational institution pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate) in a qualifying and accredited educational institution, on a full or half-time basis (as defined by the institution in which the student is enrolled), including awardees of the Harry S. Truman Foundation Scholarship Program under Public Law 93-842. Students need not be in actual physical attendance, so long as all other requirements are met. To be converted into a Criminal Investigator Special Agent, GS-1811, Career Ladder 5/7/9/11/12/13, applicants must meet all GS-1811 Criminal Investigator (Special Agent) Qualification Standards, including Medical Requirements, prior to conversion. Applicants failing to meet the medical requirements at the time of their initial medical examination and drug test will be considered ineligible for the position.

Existing IRS Special Agents will undergo a periodic medical examination to determine continued fitness for duty.

Education

This position has an education requirement. You MUST submit dated documentation showing current enrollment in a qualifying institution (e.g. letter from the registrar, unofficial transcripts from current semester) by the closing date of the announcement. Education must be accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
