Summary

This position is in the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Field Organization, Midwest Area (MWA), National Animal Disease Center, Research Program Support, Facilities Engineering located in Ames, IA.

Duties

Help
  • Installs, modifies, repairs, and maintains electrical systems and components.
  • Installs, maintains, troubleshoots, replaces and repairs a large variety of equipment of electrical distribution systems, oil and dry transformers, motor control centers, a wide range of voltage (15 k:v and under).
  • Plans and lays out the routing, placement type, size, gauge, balance, load, continuity and safe operation of electrical lines, circuits, systems, equipment and controls.
  • Determines and places distribution panels, boxes, fittings, fixtures, transformers and other electrical devices.
  • Interprets and applies the National Electric code, local codes, building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, engineering drawings, and uses trade formulas to calculate common properties.
  • Utilizes a wide variety of test equipment such as test meters, voltmeters, ammeters, watt meters and ohmmeters.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for this position you must meet the following by the closing date of the vacancy announcement: 11/29/2023 Qualifications will be determined under the Job Element Rating System X-118C, Qualifications Standard Handbook. While a specific length of time and experience is not required for most Wage Grade positions, you must show through experience and training that you possess the best qualified level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of this position. Qualification requirements emphasize the quality of experience, not necessarily the length. The responses to the questionnaire and your resume should be in significant detail to provide the person rating your application with a good understanding of your ability to do the job, technical knowledge, work, and training experience, etc. (For example You must have the ability to perform the duties of a Electrician, without more than normal supervision (Screen Out)). Working Conditions:
Work is usually performed inside heated building but may be required to work on equipment located outside of buildings and on rooftops. Incumbent is subject to the possibility of broken bones, electrical shock, burns, infections, and mechanical injury, gas, cuts, bruises, fumes, dirt, and grease. Clothing changes are provided by NADC while at duty station. May be required to shower prior to reporting to duty station in accordance with entrance/exit safety protocols for specific areas of the center. Safety equipment must be used when required. incumbent is required to wear a full faced respirator when working in biological control settings.

Physical Effort:
Incumbent performs duties in crawl spaces, on ladders and scaffolding. Operates boom truck. Work requires close hand and eye coordination, active walking, prolonged periods of standing on concrete floors, climbing, bending, reaching and working cramped positions on crowded areas or confined spaces (manholes). May be required to lift equipment or material weighing 75 lbs.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
