Help

The Directorate of Cybersecurity consists of the following divisions: Cybersecurity Governance, Cybersecurity Authorization, and Security Operations Center. Under the direction of the Department's Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), the directorate manages the enterprise-wide organizational risk associated with the operation of unclassified and classified information systems through a distribution model that provides resiliency in the face of evolving threats.

Duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Applies cybersecurity and privacy principles. Studies directorate methods and protocols and standards to protect information and systems from unauthorized access, use, disclosure, disruption, modification, or destruction, data breach, or cyberattack.
  • Works with and instructs DOL customers and end-users on cybersecurity and privacy processes, procedures, and requirements. Instructs employees on Federal regulatory requirements when collecting, using, and storing personal information.
  • Maintains awareness of evolving cybersecurity and privacy threats, trends, laws, regulations, and policies.
  • Assists in the design and development of AT courses, including the necessary technical requirements to build, administer, and implement the DOL's enterprise Cybersecurity and Privacy Awareness and Training Program (AT).
  • Develops, updates, and maintains cybersecurity and privacy awareness content including role-based training.
  • Provides support, guidance, assistance, and instruction to DOL agencies and stakeholders on how to implement of the Cybersecurity and Privacy Awareness Training program.
  • Assists with the preparation and distribution of management reports.
  • Reviews and updates manuals, instructions, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) and other related assignments.
  • Coordinates logistics for delivering presentations, such as booking venues, arranging for AV equipment, and catering.
  • Assists higher-graded specialists in reviewing data collected from previous training programs to identify trends and patterns.
  • Assists in the development of Cybersecurity and Privacy Awareness and Training policies and procedures by helping to create and implement security measures to protect against cyber-attacks.
  • Assists with the development of security plans, suggests incorporation of industry best practices, and monitors systems for suspicious activity.
  • Supports higher graded specialists conducts activities and develop materials to promote awareness of security issues.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

You must meet the Basic Requirements listed in the "Education Requirements" section and the "Specialized Experience" to qualify for IT Cybersecurity Specialist (CUSTSPT), as described below.

Applicants must have 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level GS-5, in the Federal Service.

Specialized Experience is the experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform the duties of the position successfully, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level.

Qualifying specialized experience for GS-7 includes:

1. Knowledge of adult training concepts, methods, and principles and the ability to apply them to the development of cybersecurity and privacy training programs.
2. Experience collecting, analyzing, and evaluating information and data to draw conclusions and make recommendations regarding the preventative measures for cybersecurity threats and IT security management.

Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position.

OR

Superior Academic Achievement: Successful completion of all the requirements for a bachelor's degree with Superior Academic Achievement. In order to be creditable under this provision, Superior Academic Achievement must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled, such as that identified in Education above. Superior Academic Achievement is based on:(1) Class Standing - Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses; OR(2) Grade-Point Average (G.P.A.) - Applicants must have a grade-point average of either (a) 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on your official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or (b) 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum.; OR (3) Honor Society Membership - Applicants may be considered eligible based on membership in one of the approved national scholastic honor societies listed by the Association of College Honor Societies (https://www.achsnatl.org/).

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages.
