Summary

The Office of Public Affairs directs and coordinates all public and employee communications activities within the Department of Labor (DOL). OPA serves as the first point of contact for news media inquiries, clearance, and dissemination point for all DOL public-facing materials, and the development and maintenance of the Department's web-based, audiovisual, and contact center communications.

Duties

Help

As a Social Media Specialist, duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Create and implement short-and long-term social media strategies to share information about the department's work and increase stakeholder engagement.
  • Draft and post compelling written and visual content for the department's social media channels (Facebook, Twitter/X, Threads, blog, YouTube, Instagram, Linkedln, etc.).
  • Work with agency colleagues to maintain content calendars and draft/review posts for agency social channels.
  • Analyze performance metrics and identify opportunities to increase engagement on social platforms. Develop and analyze strategies to increase engagement.
  • Monitor and respond to online comments. Engage with partners to maintain rapport and strengthen relationships.
  • Draft content for newsletters and assist with online distribution.
  • Offer guidance and training on social media best practices
  • Stay abreast of best practices, trends and technologies for each social media platform, with a focus on making content accessible and engaging.

To qualify at the GS-12 grade level applicants must meet the following:

Specialized experience: Your resume must demonstrate one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, GS-11, in the Federal Service. Examples of specialized experience would typically include but are not limited to:
1) Drafting and posting content to social media for a business, organization, or government office to convey messages and/or policies; and
2) Analyzing social media performance and using that information to develop social media strategies; and
3) Researching new social media and digital products, projects, or technologies.

Specialized Experience is the experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform the duties of the position successfully, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level.

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
