Help

As a Supervisory Data Scientist, you will perform the following duties which are not all-inclusive:

  • Develops, adapts, and integrates data mining capacities using enhanced algorithms as well as structured databases to achieve the insight and perform predictive analytics on data.
  • Uses knowledge of developments and advancements in data science topics to identify and advocate for new technology and tools; evaluates the feasibility and suitability of emerging and alternative analytical methods, assesses the net impact on existing processes, and communicates potential impacts on current and prospective projects.
  • Establishes project objectives, both in terms of necessary methodologies and desired output; identifies, designs, develops, and applies new or novel approaches based on modern data science techniques to WHD analytical projects.
  • Plans and coordinates work efforts to provide factual and analytical information and to present alternative approaches to WHD policy and guidance.
  • Develops standard operating procedures for data handling, product maintenance, and team record keeping.
  • Speaks on behalf of WHD on data and data policy issues; provides advice and alternative perspectives to higher-level officials on strategic planning for data analytics needs; represents WHD in DOL-wide communities of practice and develops and maintains a robust professional network to support innovation and collaboration.
  • Plans work to be accomplished by subordinates; makes assignments based on capability and expertise; evaluates the work performance of subordinates; develops performance standards; gives advice or instruction to subordinates on work and administrative matters; and identifies developmental and training needs of employees, providing or arranging for needed development or training.

To qualify for Supervisory Data Scientist, you must meet the basic requirements and the specialized experience, as described below:

Basic Requirements for Data Science Series:
Applicants must have a bachelor's (or higher) degree in mathematics, statistics, computer science, data science, or a field directly related to the position. The degree must be in a major field of study (at least at the baccalaureate level) that is appropriate for the position.
-OR-
Have a combination of education and experience which includes courses equivalent to a major field of study (30 semester hours) as shown above, plus additional education or appropriate experience.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, you must also meet the specialized experience listed below:

Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience that is equivalent to the GS-14 grade level, in Federal service, which includes:
(1) Identifying data requirements within an organization to support program activities and developing corresponding reporting and visualization products and platforms, guiding principles for data use and analysis; and
(2) Applying data science tools and techniques to complete varied and sophisticated analytical projects, including the creation and maintenance of data pipelines, data warehouses, databases, and other data storage and transformation systems; and
(3) Building capacity for advanced analytics, including automation, forecasting, establishing performance measures, and leveraging external data sources.

Applicants must meet time-in-grade (52 weeks at the GS-14 grade level), time-after-competitive-appointment (90 days, if applicable), and qualifications requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement to be eligible for consideration (08/02/2023).

  • This position is subject to the confidential financial disclosure requirements of the Ethics in Government Act of 1978 (P.L. 95-521). Therefore, if selected, you will be required to complete a Confidential Financial Disclosure Report (OGE Form 450) to determine if a conflict or an appearance of a conflict exists between your financial interest(s) and your prospective position with DOL.
