MICU/SICU/ER
The MICU RN provides direct hands-on care for critically ill patients admitted to the medical critical care unit. The RN will provide expert direct and individualized nursing care to acutely ill patients based on the application of scientific nursing principles.
The SICU RN provides hands on direct experience caring for critically ill vascular and general surgical patients who have undergone complex surgical procedures.
The ED RN is responsible for delivery of nursing care to patients presenting to the Emergency Department with various illnesses, injuries and afflictions including acute coronary syndrome, stroke, psychiatric disturbances, surgical maladies, and others. This position will require excellent triage skills, sound clinical judgment, excellent people skills and experience. The ED Staff RN will triage, perform phlebotomy, and start IVs when indicated.

Medical/Surgical/Telemetry
The General Medicine/Oncology RN provides direct patient care in support of ADLS, educational, spiritual and psychological support and pain management & medication administration.
Surgical RN provides care to pre- and post-surgical patients. Surgeries include general, urology, orthopedic, gastric bypass, plastics, vascular, ENT, and others.
The Telemetry RN provides direct hands-on care for patients admitted to the inpatient units throughout the BPVAHCS. The RN will provide ADLs, family support and education, spiritual and psychological support, pain management and medication administration.
The Cardiac Telemetry RN functions under the direction and guidance of the nurse manager for the Cardiac Telemetry Unit in providing clinical patient-centered care on the off tours. The RN will need an understanding of step-down cardiac units and cardiac infusions.

CLC/Hospice RN
The Community Living Center (CLC) and Hospice RN will be responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing and/or supervising direct patient care. The RN assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates care based on age specific components; assumes responsibility for the coordination of care focused on patient transition through the continuum of care, patient and family education, patient self-management after discharge; and supporting factors that impact customer satisfaction. The RN considers all characteristics of the individual, including age and life stages, state of health, race and culture, values, and previous experiences.

Primary Care: CWY, Lee County, Northern and Southern CBOCs PACT - RN
The Pact RN will provide direct & indirect care to patients/families in the outpatient setting. The RN will function as a primary nurse in support of the PACT Team (Patient, Primary Care Provider, LPN and MSA). Duties will include but are not limited to consultation with physicians, referrals to other clinical specialist as needed, admissions, telephone triage, physical assessment, maintain and support the flow of patients throughout the clinic, oversight of nursing staff, documentation, diabetic checks, point of care testing including, pregnancy testing, finger stick glucometer, and EKGs, vital signs, health screening including ETOH, depression, and PTSD.

Inpatient MH - 3B/3A/MHRRTP
The RN for Inpatient Mental Health interacts with Veterans, family members, and an interdisciplinary team of professionals. Responsible for providing pre, intra, and post procedure education to the patients, families, significant others, and/or caregivers. The RN is responsible for administering and evaluating pharmacological and other therapeutic treatment regimens mandated by the situation, evidence-based practice, and recent advancements in mental health care. The RN is responsible for assisting the physician and/or advanced provider during diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to promote optimal patient outcomes. The RN performs other related duties as required by the Nurse Manager.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The approving official may authorize a waiver of the requirement for ACEN or CCNE accreditation of any degree in nursing provided the college or university has regional accreditation from an accrediting body recognized by the Department of Education at the time of the candidate's graduation and the composite qualifications of the applicant warrant such consideration. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
  • Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience.
Note regarding MSN degrees: If your MSN was obtained via a Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration, a BSN is not required.

Physical Requirements: Incumbent must possess the mental and physical ability to satisfactorily perform the duties of the proposed assignment. Physical requirements include visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. May involve potentially long periods of lifting, carrying, pulling, pushing, reaching above shoulder, walking, standing, sitting, kneeling, and repeated bending. Transferring patients and objects may be required. Safe patient handling equipment is provided. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations, operative/invasive procedures, or home settings. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs. Must complete annual Employee Health as a condition of employment. The incumbent who provides care in home settings or other off-site locations may be required to drive, sit and/or ride in GSA vehicles for long periods of time.

In-direct patient care work is mostly sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably to complete the work. However, there may be some walking, standing, bending, and carrying of light items such as patient records and supplies. In-direct care staff may be assigned to work in direct care areas as needed.

Education

Outpatient Mental Health Clinics
The RN for Outpatient Mental Health is responsible to the nurse manager and will provide direct patient care to veterans in an outpatient clinical setting.

Resource (Full Time & Part Time)
The RN Resource Team/Float pool will provide staffing relief within the medical center including medical-surgical, cardiac telemetry, hospice, mental health, ER, and/or ICU experience. The RN will provide direct hands-on care in the form of admission assessments, IV therapy, medication administration, nursing diagnosis, telemetry, treatment plans, point of care testing.

Perioperative - PeriOp/OR
The Perioperative Registered Nurse practices as a RN in the Operating Room, providing care for patients in the preoperative, intra-operative and postoperative phases of the process. Patient population include, but are not limited to those having ENT, General Surgery, Genitourinary, Orthopedic, Podiatry, Ophthalmology, Endoscopy, Pain Management, Vascular, Thoracic, Pain Management and Urology procedures. The OR RN is responsible for a sustained level of clinical practice using the nursing process while working effectively with professional and supportive personnel who provide patient care. May be assigned to either scrub or circulating role.

Perioperative - ASU/PACU
This position is for a registered nurse to provide care for the patient before and or after surgery. The nurse should be very competent in the management of airways, pain control, hemodynamic monitoring and be committed to the care of others. He/she should have an advanced knowledge of anesthesia and physical assessments; must have critical care nursing skills such as obtaining venous access, inserting tubes, positioning patient and dressing changes. He/she must have experience in surgical procedures and an expert knowledge in understating specific patient populations including the elderly. All RNs must maintain BLS and ACLS certification.

Specialty - Medical Specialty
Medical Specialty Clinics (dermatology, endocrinology, rheumatology, cardiology, GI, neurology, pulmonology, diabetes educators, infectious disease, Pain (interventional and non-interventional)). The successful candidate will have a minimum of 3years professional experience in a clinical setting. The RN will provide staffing relief across all medical specialty clinics. The professional RN will provide hands on care in procedural areas, administrative areas and other assigned duties. The RN will work M-F 0800-1630.

Specialty - Surgical Specialty
Surgical Specialty Clinics (ENT, Spine, Ortho, Plastics, Thoracic, general, breast, GYN, podiatry, bariatric, vascular, etc.). The successful candidate will have a minimum of 3years professional experience in a clinical setting. The RN will provide staffing relief across all surgical specialty clinics. The professional RN will provide hands on care in procedural areas, administrative areas and other assigned duties. The RN will provide emotional and physical support to the patient and family, with a focus on education to Veteran and family. The RN will work M-F 0800-1630
