Summary

The Office of Public Affairs directs and coordinates all public and employee communications activities within the Department of Labor (DOL). OPA serves as the first point of contact for news media inquiries, clearance, and dissemination point for all DOL public-facing materials, and the development and maintenance of the Department's web-based, audiovisual, and contact center communications.

Washington D.C. is the preferred duty location however other duty locations may be considered.

Help

As a Social Media Specialist, duties will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Drafts and reviews social media materials to communicate department policies and messages on multiple platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram and the department's blog.
  • Applies a substantial knowledge of communications and plain language principals to create clear, accurate and accessible messages for audiences with diverse interests and backgrounds.
  • Demonstrates strong writing, editing and oral communications skills, and an understanding of customer-centered design.
  • Works with subject matter experts to create and implement multi-platform social media communication plans highlighting the department's work.
  • Works with creative team to create audio-visual materials in support of social media communications.
  • Provides oversight and assessment of social media content, along with recommendations for new opportunities.
  • Establishes benchmarks and evaluates social media performance using basic analytical methods. Prepare reports assessing the impact of the department's social media outreach, with recommendations for improving the effectiveness of online communications.
  • Monitors online conversations and provides recommendations for engagement.
  • Coordinates with department colleagues to create and execute stakeholder engagement strategies using social media platforms, the department blog, newsletters and other media.
  • Advises and coordinates on virtual events, such as Twitter chats, Facebook Live events, and YouTube Premieres.
  • Under guidance from management, plans for and responds to crisis situations on social media.

Qualifications

A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. To qualify for this position, the resume must demonstrate one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 grade level, in the Federal Service. The experience must be directly related to the work of the position.

Examples of specialized experience are as follows:
1) Drafting and posting content to social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, etc. to communicate organizational messages and/or policies; and
2) Assessing social media performance; and
3) Researching new social media and digital products, projects, and/or technologies for suitability as communications tools.

OR-Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M., if related

OR-Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.

Applicants must meet the eligibility requirements of time-in-grade (52 weeks at GS-09), time-after-competitive-appointment (90 days), and minimum qualifications. These requirements must be met within 30 days of 07/06/2023, the announcement closing date.

Education

There are no education requirements for this position. However, if you wish to use your education as a basis for meeting the minimum qualification requirements, you must submit academic transcripts from an accredited institution demonstrating that you meet the qualifying education. If you do not submit sufficient academic documentation necessary to demonstrate that you meet the minimum qualification requirements based on education as described in this announcement, your application will be deemed incomplete, and you will receive no further consideration for this vacancy.
