  • Collaborates with other scientists to better understand how turbulence affects fire dynamics across a span of spatio-temporal scales and applications.
  • Develops tools for assessing how turbulence affects smoke and dispersion from wildland fires.
  • Fosters an improved understanding of the linkages between fire activity, climate patterns, and ecosystem dynamics.
  • Helps analyze the impact of atmospheric conditions on fire seasons and ecosystem evolution in the north-central and northeast United States
  • Provides improved understanding of seasonal wildland fire activity to aid fire and forest managers in making long-term management decisions and assessing resource needs
  • Uses global and regional climate models to examine future changes in the frequency of weather events and assess the potential impact of these changes on forest ecosystems.
  • Investigates via observations and modeling how ambient and fire-induced atmospheric turbulence interact and impact fire behavior and variability in fire spread

Qualifications

This is a research scientist position and is classified under the scientist career plan. Research scientists have open-ended promotion potential. Research accomplishments and their impact on the duties and responsibilities of positions are evaluated periodically. The grade level is limited only by the individual's demonstrated ability to perform research of recognized importance to science and technology. Final grade level will be determined by a peer review panel. The purpose of the initial review panel is to determine the grade level upon entry into a position. In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience and/or directly related education in the amounts listed below.
GS-12: One year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-11). Specialized experience at this level is defined as:

  • Conducting the full cycle of scientific research (including identifying research topics, defining study objectives, organizing and conducting the research, interpreting the results, and presenting the findings in the form of reports, demonstrations, manuscripts, and other appropriate technology transfer activities) in or related to physical fire science and fire-environment interactions
  • Modeling how ambient and fire-induced atmospheric turbulence interact and impact fire behavior and variability in fire spread using high-speed IR/visual imagery and high-frequency wind measurements during fire experiments.
  • Forming, leading, and participating in research teams having regional and/or national importance.

  • Disseminating research findings at conferences or scientific meetings and publishing results in peer-reviewed journals.

Conferred Ph.D. degree that included scientific research in areas related to the work of the position which is physical fire science and fire-environment interactions and/or includes coursework in areas such as meteorology, climatology, fluid dynamics, air pollution, numerical/ computational methods, and disturbance ecology, turbulence impacts on fire dynamics; fire-atmosphere interactions; modeling the space/time evolution of prescribed fire emissions; potential impacts of climate change on fire regimes; smoke transport and dispersion. To qualify based on education, your transcripts must show the conferral of your Ph.D.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Basic Requirement for Meteorology Series (1340):
Degree: meteorology, atmospheric science, or other natural science major that included:

  1. At least 24 semester (36 quarter) hours of credit in meteorology/atmospheric science including a minimum of:
    1. Six semester hours of atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamics;*
    2. Six semester hours of analysis and prediction of weather systems (synoptic/mesoscale);
    3. Three semester hours of physical meteorology; and
    4. Two semester hours of remote sensing of the atmosphere and/or instrumentation.
  2. Six semester hours of physics, with at least one course that includes laboratory sessions.*
  3. Three semester hours of ordinary differential equations.*
  4. At least nine semester hours of course work appropriate for a physical science major in any combination of three or more of the following: physical hydrology, statistics, chemistry, physical oceanography, physical climatology, radiative transfer, aeronomy, advanced thermodynamics, advanced electricity and magnetism, light and optics, and computer science.
* There is a prerequisite or corequisite of calculus for course work in atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamics, physics, and differential equations. Calculus courses must be appropriate for a physical science major.

OR

Combination of education and experience -- course work as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
