Help

Students placed in the SEC's Career Internship Program will work with SEC staff members on various projects and assignments that cover a broad range of the Commissions' work. Internship assignments range from supporting securities regulations to assisting in professional administrative duties such as human resources, contracting, auditing, etc. Typical duties include the following:

Assist in conducting analysis and research in support of assigned program areas.
Respond to routine questions within the assigned program areas.
Assist in the maintenance of automated databases.

Location: This position is located at the SEC's Headquarters building in Washington, DC. Interns will work in one of the following Divisions/ Offices:

Office of Human Resources (OHR) - The Office of Human Resources (OHR) provides leadership for the strategic management of the SEC's human capital by administering programs, establishing policies, and ensuring compliance with federal regulations. It also serves as the agency's liaison to the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) and other federal government agencies, professional human resources organizations, educational institutions, and the private sector in matters relating to human capital management activities.

Division of Economic and Risk Analysis (DERA) - The Division of Economic and Risk Analysis provides impartial quantitative and qualitative economic analyses, accurate and reliable data, and insights from scientific research in support of the Commission's mission, including the agency's rulemaking, enforcement, and examinations functions.

Office of Support Operations (OSO) -The Office of Support Operations (OSO) provides services that enable efficient SEC operations. OSO is responsible for the processing of requests under the Freedom of Information and Privacy Acts, the management of all agency records in accordance with the Federal Records Act, maintaining the security and safety of all SEC facilities, as well as property and equipment management and overall building operations.

Office of the General Counsel (OGC) - The General Counsel is the chief legal officer of the Commission and heads the Office of the General Counsel (OGC). The office provides a variety of legal services to the Commission and staff, and is divided into four groups: Appellate, General Litigation, Adjudication, and Legal Policy.

Office of the Chief Accountant (OCA) - The Office of the Chief Accountant is responsible for establishing and enforcing accounting and auditing policy to enhance the transparency and relevancy of financial reporting, and for improving the professional performance of public company auditors in order to ensure that financial statements used for investment decisions are presented fairly and have credibility.

Division of Enforcement (ENF) - The Division of Enforcement conducts investigations into possible violations of the federal securities laws, and prosecutes the Commission's civil suits in the federal courts as well as in its administrative proceedings.

Division of Corporation Finance (CF) - The mission of the Division of Corporation Finance (CF) is to see that investors are provided with material information in order to make informed investment decisions - both when a company initially offers its stock to the public and on a regular basis as it continues to give information to the marketplace. The Division also provides guidance to companies on SEC rules and forms and proposes new and revised rules to the Commission.

Office of the Chief Operating Officer (OCOO) - The Office of the Chief Operating Officer (OCOO) and its subordinate offices develop and execute agency management policies, while facilitating the efficient and effective use of resources in support of the agency's mission. We coordinate the agency's compliance with operational requirements enacted by the Congress and the executive branch, and enforced by agencies such as the Office of Management and Budget, Government Accountability Office, General Services Administration, and Office of Personnel Management.

Division of Examinations (EXAMS) - The Division of Examinations conducts the SEC's National Exam Program (NEP). The NEP's mission is to protect investors, ensure market integrity and support responsible capital formation through risk-focused strategies that: (1) improve compliance; (2) prevent fraud; (3) monitor risk; and (4) inform policy. The results of the NEP's examinations are used by the SEC to inform rule-making initiatives, identify and monitor risks, improve industry practices and pursue misconduct.

Office of Minority and Women Inclusion (OMWI)- The Office of Minority and Women Inclusion provides leadership and guidance for the SEC's efforts to leverage diversity and inclusion throughout the agency to enhance mission performance and impact.

GPA: You must have at the time of application and maintain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of a 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale, or the equivalent for the duration of the appointment.
ENROLLMENT REQUIREMENT: You must be accepted for enrollment or enrolled at least half-time in an accredited educational institution pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate. You must maintain status as a current student while on this appointment.
PROOF OF ENROLLMENT: You must furnish course registration information at the start of each school term; and provide verification of academic status (transcript) at the end of each school term.
WORK SCHEDULES: Interns shall work full-time during the summer AND full-time or part-time (i.e., at least 20 hours per week) work schedules during the school year (based on agency needs) while continuing their education.
The anticipated start date of this position is in Fall 2023.

To be eligible for consideration for this internship under the Pathways Internship Program, you must meet the following:

The qualification requirements must be met within 60 calendar days of the closing date of this announcement.

Qualifying experience may be obtained in the private or public sector. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. In order to qualify for this position at the GS/SK-05 level, you must possess the following:

SEC Compensation Program: The overall salary range listed above is provided for informational purposes as it represents the full range that is applicable to current employees in this occupation/grade; however, a selectee's initial pay is always set below the maximum rate of the range. Hourly Rates: Hourly rates are as follows:

SK-05: $22.49 to $34.41 ($46,941 to $71,811 Per Year)
SK-07: $27.86 to $43.25 ($58,147 to $90,256 Per Year)

This is a year-round internship, and the intent of the position is that the student is able to work at least 640 hours while still in school in order to be eligible for non-competitive conversion.

Conversion Eligibility: If selected, you may be non-competitively converted to a permanent or term appointment upon graduation as long as you meet the following criteria: (1) complete at least 640 hours of work experience acquired through the program; (2) obtain a degree or certificate; (3) meet the qualification standards for the position to which to be converted; (4) receive a recommendation for retention from a supervisor; and (5) meet agency-specific requirements as specified in the Participant Agreement. All Pathways program requirements must be completed prior to the completion of the qualifying degree/certificate program. Conversion to the competitive service must take place within 120 days of successful degree completion. The 120-day period cannot be used for the Intern to finish any remaining program requirements, it is used solely for administrative purposes.

If converted to a permanent or term appointment, the anticipated target position's full performance level is SK-11; however, the full performance level may change based on the needs of the organization at the time of conversion.

Note: The SEC is NOT obligated to make an offer of permanent or term employment. Agencies may credit or waive up to 320 of the required 640 hours of work experience based on certain criterion, done on a case-by-case basis.
