You will perform duties in all the major functional areas (Timber Sale Preparation, Timber Sale Administration, Forest Management Inventories, Forest Development, and Forest Protection) of the Branch of Forestry. Your duties will include, but are not limited to:
Laying out timber cutting blocks, mapping cutting areas, designating trees to be harvested, locating timber cruise plots, measuring trees to estimate sale volume, and recording data to prepare contract timber sales and timber cutting permits on the Reservation.
Inspecting logging areas for contract or permit compliance, mapping logged areas, documenting contract compliance issues, and scaling logs to determine sale volume in administering timber sales contracts and timber cutting permits on the Reservation.
Locating sample plots, monumenting plots, measuring trees, evaluating tree characteristics, recording data, entering data into a computer program, and editing data for forest management inventories on the Reservation.
Laying out treatment areas, mapping treatment areas, completing regeneration and stocking surveys and inspecting treatment areas, and providing technical advice to thinning crews and contractors in planning and implementing forest development projects on the Reservation.
The major duties listed above are at the full performance level GS-5.

Qualifications
The following shows the amounts of experience and education required to qualify for positions covered by this standard.
For the GS-04 level: 6 months of general experience and 6 months of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-3 grade level that is directly related to the work of the position.
Examples of general experience include working in any professional, technical, or other responsible fields that provided you with familiarity with forest management programs or techniques for collecting scientific data. AND Examples of specialized experience include participating in forestry inventory, timber sales, trespass, cruising, and road layout projects; and marking timber in accordance with simple specifications and marking rules. OR
4 Seasons of specialized experience that was at least 3 months in duration for each season in forestry aid or technician work; engineering, range, or soil conservation technician work that involved the application of cultural, resource conservation, or land management practices on non-forest or ranch lands when combined with knowledge of forestry operations and equipment; farming or ranching work that involved application of cultural and soil and water conservation practices, including safety and use of equipment, and that provided a basic understanding of land use; or forest or range fire control, prevention, or suppression work. OR
Successful completion of 2 years of study above the high school level that included at least 12 semester hours (or 18 quarter hours) in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. No more than 3 semester hours in mathematics is creditable. OR
A combination of experience and education to meet total experience.
For the GS-05 level: Applicants must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 grade level or its non-Federal equivalent that demonstrates assisting in timber sale layout including marking sale boundary and harvest trees; cruising timber to obtain harvest measurements; and monitoring forest treatments. OR Successful completion of a full 4-year course study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. No more than 6 semester hours in mathematics is creditable. OR A combination of experience and education to meet total experience.
Combining Experience and Education:Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience are also qualifying. The combinations described below are those most typical for these positions, i.e., for grades GS-3 through GS-5. If education is used to meet specialized experience requirements, then such education must include courses directly related to the work of the position.
For GS-4 level positions, determine the applicant's total qualifying experience as a percentage of the 1 year of experience required for GS-4; then determine the applicant's education as a percentage of the 2 years of education that meets the requirements for GS-4. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for GS-4.
For GS-5 level positions, only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. Two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year is equivalent to l year of specialized experience. Determine the applicant's total qualifying experience as a percentage of the year of specialized experience required at the GS-5 level. Then determine the applicant's education as a percentage of the education that meets the requirements for GS-5. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for GS-5.
