This position is in the Executive Office of the President (EOP), OMB's Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA), the oversight authority for Executive Branch regulatory actions, information collections, and Federal statistical, information quality and privacy policy. Pursuant to Executive Order 12866, the Paperwork Reduction Act, Privacy Act, and related authorities, OIRA reviews and/or develops economic, scientific, statistical, and legal aspects of these actions.
The position requires a broad set of analytical, communication, and organizational skills, along with emotional intelligence and the ability to be flexible in a fast-paced environment. Successful candidates from a diverse set of backgrounds and life experiences will have significant opportunities to make a meaningful difference for the public through OIRA's regulatory oversight and information policy roles.
As a ECONOMIST, GS-0110-14/15, your typical work assignments may include the following:
- Examine the economic consequences of regulatory activities related to transportation, homeland security, labor, food and health, climate, energy, education, agriculture, housing, justice, immigration, social security, environment, and federal benefits programs.
- Assist with meeting the objectives of Executive Order 12866, Executive Order 13563, the Paperwork Reduction Act, and the Information Quality Act and provide analytical support to OMB policy officials on a variety of regulatory issues as well as understand, and confirm agency analyses comply with, the requirements of OMB Circular A-4, "Regulatory Analysis."
- Assess the strengths and weaknesses of statistical methods, procedures, inference and concepts involved in federal government surveys and other information collections by federal agencies.
-Provide advice on the advantages and disadvantages of various data science approaches, as well as potential applicability of new techniques.
- Draft reports on the benefits and costs of regulation. Monitor and review regulations issued by Federal agencies to determine whether they are consistent with the President's regulatory policy, Executive Order 12866, and Executive Order 13563.
- Develop economic tools to evaluate current conditions and project future trends in the overall economy, and measure the impact of fiscal policy and programmatic changes on the economy.
- Research the effectiveness, benefits and costs of policies and spending programs, developing econometric or other economic models.
- Participate in a variety of cross-cutting research studies with other staff members in the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, other divisions of OMB, and other Federal agencies.
- Review current economic and technical literature for concepts, conclusions, and data.
- Work with staff and policymakers throughout OMB, EOP, and other agencies on a range of issues.
