Duties

Help

Performs multiple, varying, and complex assignments under the direction of a manager, project/program manager, team leader, or more experienced technical specialist. Supports new weather product and capability development and evaluation activities such as development and review of software requirements, generation of weather capability source code, development of test and evaluation tools, establishment of evaluation environments, defining and configuring cloud environments, collection and archive of weather data sets, development of test plans and procedures, test and evaluation of weather products and capabilities, maintenance and configuration of laboratory resources, and the deployment of weather data services on containers and virtual machines.

Participates on an interdisciplinary team of technical experts to develop, test, acquire and/or implement weather systems and capabilities into the NAS. Participates in the analysis and development of system architecture and software capabilities specifically utilizing NAS architectures and cloud-based strategies.

Applies experience and detailed knowledge applicable to computer science to accomplish assignments. Understands how computer science interacts with or is affected by other disciplines and considers the objectives of the major subdivision and Line of Business (LOB)/Servicing Organization (SO) when developing, integrating, and implementing solutions to diverse, complex problems. Typical assignments may include system design and integration; requirements definition; software development; defining and/or configuring cloud environments; collecting, recording and analyzing data/information; identifying problems; and performing investigation and inspection activities.

Demonstrates some independence in planning time and using assigned resources to accomplish assignments and small projects.

Contacts are primarily internal to the organizational unit, major subdivisions, and LOB/SO, with some contact with contractors, customers, and external organizations. Contacts are typically intended to share information, provide data and/or written analysis, and/or discuss the statuses of assignments.

Established policies/procedures provide guidance for most assignments but allow some discretion to select the most appropriate approach. Typically receives guidance on selecting approach from a manager, project/program manager, team leader or more experienced computer scientist. May provide recommendations to improve work processes.

Work is reviewed periodically during assignments and at completion to ensure timeliness and technical compliance with the requirements of the projects or other work activity.

Basic Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in computer science or bachelor's degree with 30 semester hours in a combination of mathematics, statistics, and computer science. At least 15 of the 30 semester hours must have included any combination of statistics and mathematics that included differential and integral calculus. All academic degrees and course work must be from accredited or pre-accredited institutions.

To qualify for this position, you must demonstrate in your application that you possess at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to FV-G, FG/GS 5/7/9. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position.

Specialized experience is: Experience in software requirements, design, and test; source code generation; UNIX operating systems; test and evaluation tools; and virtual machines.

OR

3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree.

Career Path Progression Position (CPPP): This is a career path progression position and has full promotion potential to the pay band FV-I without further competition.
