What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position?

This is a term appointment not to exceed 13 months/years with possible extensions up to a total of 4 years without further competition. Appointment to this position will not convey permanent status in the Federal service.

Salary:GS-02 $33,241 (Step 01) to $40,099 (Step 10). GS-03 $33,906 (Step 01) to $41,637 (Step 10).


NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01.

Help

As a Hydrologic Technician within the South Atlantic Water Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Performs a wide variety of stage and discharge measurements using appropriate techniques, equipment, and protocols.
  • Performs wide variety of water level and discharge measurements from wells and springs.
  • Installs, maintains, services, and assists in the configuration of a variety of sensing, recording, and communications.
  • Participates with a team in the simple construction of a variety of gauges and supporting structures.
  • Operates a government owned/leased vehicle as an incidental driver.

Physical Demands
The work regularly requires considerable dexterity, agility, and strenuous physical exertion such as: climbing and/or working from tall ladders and scaffolding; work in areas where footing is treacherous such as slippery or icy river banks, steep rocky terrain, cableways, or fast-moving water; lifting heavy objects weighing 23 kilograms (50 pounds) or more, or crouching or crawling in restricted areas

Work Environment
Office conditions do not require special safety precautions; field conditions may include extreme heat or cold, rain or snow; hazardous conditions such as ice or flooding; or exposure to irritant or toxic chemicals. Work may require the use of personal protective equipment such as masks, coats, boots, goggles, respirators, or life jackets

Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?

  • You will be required to operate a government-owned or -leased vehicle in the performance of your official duties. Applicants for this position must meet the following requirements: (1) possess a valid State license, and (2) possess a safe driving record. If selected, you will be required to provide proof of a valid State license & a copy of your driving record
  • Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment. Individuals who have delinquent account balances from a previous Government charge card will be required to satisfy their existing obligation before a new card can be issued.
  • A background investigation will be required for this position. Continued employment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication. Failure to successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for termination.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-2 level:

Three months of experience of any kind that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position
;**OR experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation
**OR high school graduation or the equivalent.


Applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-3 level:

Six months of general experience of any kind that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position or that has provided the applicant with a general knowledge of hydrologic practices and procedures;
**OR one full year of successfully completed education above the high school level that included at least one course in subjects such as engineering, industrial technology, construction drafting, surveying, physical science, biology, or mathematics
.**OR a combination of post-high school education and general experience that together equates to 100% of the qualification requirement.

Education

  • Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
  • Education completed in colleges or universities outside the United States may be used to meet the above requirements.
