The Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) is committed to advancing knowledge and understanding of the Native cultures of the Western Hemisphere, past, present, and future, through partnership with Native people and others. NMAI includes three facilities: NMAI-DC, NMAI-NY, and the Cultural Resources Center (CRC) in Suitland, MD which houses NMAI’s collection. This position is located in the NMAI Financial Planning Office and serves as a Financial Analyst.

The Financial Analyst:

  • Reviews multiyear project plans, budgets, and the impact on current and projected financial resources to cover project planning, implementation, and maintenance and advises management on ways to administer and maximize Federal budget allocations and net revenues from business and fundraising activities.
  • Ensures trust fund account requirements, including receipt of private funds, disbursement of private funds, etc. provides expert technical advice and assistance in the area of record keeping, planning, disbursement, etc. for all private funding sources for the NMAI.
  • Performs daily tasks in support of prudent budget practices including a wide range of categories such as salaries and benefits, travel under federal regulations, procurement activities in support of educational and public programs, exhibits development and installation, outreach to Native communities throughout the hemisphere.
  • Advises the other budget analysts within NMAI on budget execution practices, including resolving reconciliation concerns; prepares summary reports on SI ERP spending by department for reconciliations. In addition, reviews and analyzes NMAI funds management system to recommend updates/changes to the system.

Qualifications

To qualify for the GS-12 on Experience, you must have at least one year of experience equal or equivalent to the GS-11 it must include:

  • Experience performing budget execution tasks for two of the following programs in an organization: salaries and benefits; travel under federal regulations; procurement activities in support of a museum, cultural, educational, or historical organization.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

  • Knowledge to manage private funding source requirements for a museum, cultural, educational, or historical organization, gained through experience.
  • Ability to perform budget management of a variety of programs in a museum, cultural, educational, or historical organization, gained through experience.
