At the GS-04 level, you will:

  • Assist with varied but routine environmental protection work to support higher level members of the branch or division for planning for program management of environmental programs;
  • Review and summarize a variety of environmental program information data for supervisor’s use in preparing reports and programs evaluations;
  • Assist higher graded specialists by performing clear cut assignments that allow employee to become familiar with the basic EPA statues and regulations;
  • Work as a team member on a special project or study teams performing day to day staff operations to assist higher level analysts in the organization to which assigned.

At the GS-05 level, you will:

  • Review files, record and other documents to compile and summarize information pertaining to environmental programs and/or compliance reviews;
  • Provide information and assistance on procedural requirements and formats for filing various applications, permits, grant applications, or compliance-related forms and documents which may be required;
  • Collect, track, compute, and summarize statistical information and data in chart and narrative forms;
  • Conduct information searches and reviews references and guidelines to resolve problems and questions in assigned functional area.

At the GS-07 level, you will:

  • Perform administrative studies of a standard nature on regulatory and compliance issues and problems, including analyzing data, making queries of automated systems, developing reports;
  • Prepare initial recommendations for solutions to be reviewed by higher graded staff;
  • Support higher-graded staff in planning for program management of environmental programs;
  • Assist staff in preparation of materials for, and participation in, briefings with managers;
  • Review literature for assessment and information gathering.

You must have and maintain good academic standing as defined by your academic institution (typically a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0).

You must be enrolled at least half-time and maintain at least a half-time course load as defined by your academic institution (typically 6 undergraduate credit hours or 4.5 graduate credit hours per semester).

If you are selected, the entire period served under the Internship Program will be a trial period.

To ensure compliance with an applicable preliminary nationwide injunction, which may be supplemented, modified, or vacated, depending on the course of ongoing litigation, the Federal Government will take no action to implement or enforce the COVID-19 vaccination requirement pursuant to Executive Order 14043 on Requiring Coronavirus Disease 2019 Vaccination for Federal Employees. Qualifications

In addition to the eligibility requirements for the Pathways Internship Program, Pathways Interns qualify for an initial appointment based on their educational achievements as described below:

To qualify for the GS-04 level, you need to have completed two full academic years of post-high school study or an associate’s degree.

To qualify for the GS-05 level, you need to have completed four academic years of post-high school leading to a bachelor’s degree or equivalent degree.

To qualify for the GS-07 level, you need to have completed one full academic year of graduate level education; or a bachelor’s degree with superior academic achievement (Superior Academic Achievement Definition).

The Pathways Internship Program is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, with opportunities to work in agencies and explore Federal careers while still in school and while getting paid for the work performed. Except in special circumstances, those new to the federal government will be hired at the starting salary (step 1) of the applicable grade range listed in the Overview section.
