Duties

Help

Identifies unit-level requirements for new meteorological modeling systems to enhance current or projected requirements. Plans system development,acquisition, and integration of meteorological computer hardware and software. Identifies and resolves problems, which include issues that have significant impact on components of a mission-essential program.

Expert in the usage of complex mesoscale models and transport and diffusion models; in particular, the Weather Research and Forecast model (WRF), the Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) model, the Second-order Closure Integrated Puff (SCIPUFF) model, and these models' use on High Performance Computing (HPC).

National level expert for work contracted with major university meteorology departments, the National Center for Atmospheric Research, and other agencies on state-of-the-art meteorological modeling research and development(R&D). Works directly with internationally recognized scientist for an emerging program of national interest.

Attends national and international conferences on atmospheric modeling to assess changes in modeling technology and analyzes research performed by various national laboratories, government agencies, and private contractors for the purpose of enhancing analysis and evaluation methodologies.

Works extensively with High Performance Computing (HPC). Writes scripts, manipulates data, and performs meteorological analyses on these systems.

  • The candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a Special Sensitive Security Clearance with access to sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI). A Non-Disclosure agreement must be signed
  • PCS expenses will NOT BE paid IAW JTR and Air Force Regulations
  • This posn is subject to provisions of the DoD Priority Placement Program

  • This is a Mission Essential (ME) position performing a Mission Critical Function (MCF) which must continue uninterrupted after the occurrence of an emergency and continued through full resumption of all functions. IAW, DoDI 3020-42

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Professional and Scientific Positions and IOR for Meteorology Series

This is a GG-13 position in the Defense Civilian Intelligence personnel System (DCIPS). The GG-13 duties for the "Professional" work category are at the "Full Performance" work level and are equivalent to those at the GS-13 level. The selectee's salary will be set within the grade equivalent to a GS/GG grade based on the selectee's qualifications in relation to the job.


BASIC REQUIREMENT OR INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENT:
Degree: meteorology, atmospheric science, or other natural science major that included:

  1. At least 24 semester (36 quarter) hours of credit in meteorology/atmospheric science including a minimum of:
    1. Six semester hours of atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamics;*
    2. Six semester hours of analysis and prediction of weather systems (synoptic/mesoscale);
    3. Three semester hours of physical meteorology; and
    4. Two semester hours of remote sensing of the atmosphere and/or instrumentation.
  2. Six semester hours of physics, with at least one course that includes laboratory sessions.*
  3. Three semester hours of ordinary differential equations.*
  4. At least nine semester hours of course work appropriate for a physical science major in any combination of three or more of the following: physical hydrology, statistics, chemistry, physical oceanography, physical climatology, radiative transfer, aeronomy, advanced thermodynamics, advanced electricity and magnetism, light and optics, and computer science.
POSITIVE EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: This position has a positive education requirement. If transcripts are not provided, your resume MUST list the appropriate academic field (e.g. biology, mechanical engineering, economics, sociology, etc.) and all courses you have taken (including those failed), which appear to satisfy the qualification requirements of the position for which you are applying. List graduate and undergraduate courses separately. Include the descriptive title and course code, completion date, grade, number of semester, quarter or classroom hours (for education completed at business, secretarial, technical school or military schools) and graduate and undergraduate classes. **As of 1 Sep 2016, current internal AF employees must attach their transcripts. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:

1. Knowledge of concepts and principles in the field of atmospheric science. Knowledge must be both broad and in depth.

2. Knowledge in regional/mesoscale modeling and atmospheric transport and diffusion is required. Must have extensive experience using these models on HPC systems.

3. Knowledge of advanced meteorological data assimilation.4. Must be able to maintain effective working relationships and interact directly with scientists from varied disciplines(e.g., nuclear engineering, chemistry, and statistics).

5. Skill in community accepted best practices for atmospheric forecasting of gases and other effluents.

6. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
