Become a part of the Department that touches the lives of every American! At the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), you can give back to your community, state, and country by making a difference in the lives of Americans everywhere.
The HHS Departmental Appeals Board (DAB), a staff division within the Office of the Secretary, provides impartial, independent hearings and appellate reviews, and issues final agency decisions under more than 60 statutory provisions governing HHS programs. The DAB's mission is to provide fast, low-cost, high-quality adjudication and other conflict resolution services in administrative disputes involving HHS, and to maintain efficient and responsive business practices. Cases typically involve outside parties who disagree with a determination made by an HHS agency or its contractor. Outside parties may include states, universities, Head Start grantees, nursing homes, clinical laboratories, doctors, medical equipment suppliers, Medicare beneficiaries, and tobacco retailers, among others. Disputes heard by the DAB may involve over $1 billion in Federal funds in a single year. The DAB is organized into three adjudicatory divisions--the Appellate Division, the Civil Remedies Division, and the Medicare Operations Division. Each adjudicatory division has its own judges and staff. In addition, the DAB consists of an Alternative Dispute Resolution Division, which provides high-quality mediation services for DAB cases and the HHS workplace.
