Summary

Located in the Curatorial Office, Office of Art in Embassies Program (ART), Bureau of Overseas Building Operations (OBO).  Serves as a Museum Curator and reports to the Chief Curator and Director, Art in Embassies Program.  The purpose of this position is to plan, schedule and conduct projects in the four areas of curation: research, exhibitions, development and management of collections, and public service.

Duties

Help
  • Develop, and direct a range of temporary exhibitions of Contemporary fine art; working on permanent collections of Contemporary of fine art including commissions of monumentally-scaled art work.
  • Document visual fine art projects through original writing of catalog text or coordinating videography, and developing outreach programs with host country fine art museums and university art schools.
  • Develop research projects with appropriate scope and focus for proposal of fine art exhibition themes and the contemporary artists to be included in such exhibitions to ambassadors.
  • Direct and manage the installations of contemporary visual fine art exhibitions, collections, and complex site-specific projects such as monumentally scaled sculpture.
  • Oversees the acquisitions process. Distributes contemporary fine art acquisitions proposals, inclusive of detailed information on artist background and art work significance, for comment by curatorial staff.

Qualifications

Applicants must have ONE of the required basic entry qualification requirements described below:

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

Have an undergraduate or higher level degree from an accredited college or university museum work; OR in an applicable subject-matter field;

OR

Have 4 years of experience that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study as shown above;

OR

Have a combination of education and experience where my coursework was equivalent to a major, as shown above, PLUS appropriate experience OR additional education.

IN ADDITION to meeting one of the basic entry qualifications requirements listed above, the applicant MUST have 1 year of specialized experience that has equipped them with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. This experience is related to the work of the position and equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service. Qualifying specialized experience must demonstrate the following:

  • Experience conducting research related to exhibitions and publications in various topics in art and culture.
  • Experience managing and developing visual arts exhibitions and permanent collections to promote artistic cultural heritage around the world.
  • Experience researching and drafting interpretive text for art work included in exhibitions.

  • Knowledge of curatorial assignments that involve museum programs and installations.
  • Ability to develop and manage art collections and exhibits.
  • Ability to communicate in writing.
  • Ability to use the methods and techniques for the physical management and movement of collections and exhibits.
  • Ability to interact with a variety of individuals at all levels inside and outside of the organization.
