Some sites may have more specialized positions, including ED APNs (with documented ED experience), PMHNPs, Women's Health, PNPs, and Wound Care. This announcement covers Advance Practice Nurses (APN), Nurse Practitioners, (NP) who have a specialty.

Advance Practice Nurse (Nurse Practitioner) works as an independent nurse practitioner in their specialty, and will perform the following duties: Order, perform or interpret the results of diagnostic tests. Analyze and interpret patient's histories, symptoms, physical findings or diagnostic information to develop appropriate diagnoses. Develop treatment plans based on scientific rationale, standards of care and professional practice guidelines. Make decisions concerning medical care needs of patients, which may involve various treatment modalities, prescribed medications, consults and referrals. Diagnose or treat acute health care problems such as illnesses, infections and injuries. Prescribe medications based on efficacy, safety, dosage and frequencies. Counsel patients about drug regimen and possible side effects or interactions with other substances such as food supplements, over-the-counter (OTC) medications and herbal remedies. Recommend interventions to modify behavior associated with health risks. Educate patients about self-management of acute or chronic illnesses, tailoring instructions to patient's individual circumstances.

Measles and Rubella immunization required if born after 1957 and influenza immunization is required for all staff working in Indian Health Service facilities.

May be required to work rotating shifts, nights, weekends and holidays. On-calls hours or standby duty may be required.

Background Investigation: you must undergo a pre-employment fingerprint check and background investigation. Fingerprint results and background investigation documentation must be cleared prior to hire. After you begin your employment, your continued employment is contingent upon the outcome of a complete background investigation as determined by the sensitivity level of your position. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):

Education: A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (external link), Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (external link), Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education (external link), or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (external link) at the time the degree was obtained.

Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (external link) is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.

Advanced Practice Nurse Positions: For Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) positions, applicants must possess a graduate or higher level degree in nursing from an accredited educational program in the area of expertise or specialty indicated by the position.

  • Areas of specialties for positions at these locations may include, but are not limited to, Acute Care, Geriatric, Pediatric, Psychiatric, Women's Health, or other specialties identified for the position.
Licensure: For all grade levels and positions, applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination (external link). In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

Additional License Requirements for Advanced Practice Nurse Positions: Applicants for Advanced Practice Nurse positions must be licensed or registered by a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States in the clinical specialty required by the position.

Experience: The work experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. At the GS-9 and above grade level, many positions may require experience in a specialty area of nursing. GS-13 Minimum Qualifications: In addition to the mandatory license and education described above under Basic Requirements applicants must have at least one or more full years of Professional Nursing experience in the clinical specialty of the position that is equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-12):
  • Independent practice as a nurse practitioner, including duties such as, but not limited to: analyzing and interpreting patients' histories, symptoms, physical findings or diagnostic information to develop appropriate diagnoses, prescribing medications, managing acute and chronic care conditions, and developing treatment plans.

Additional information

Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave.

This position is covered by a Bargaining Unit.

Recruitment or relocation incentives and/or Permanent Change of Station may be authorized and is subject to availability and service unit approval. If offered, you will be required to sign a one (1) year service agreement. Failure to fulfill the service agreement will result in repayment of the incentive.
