Help

  • Assess patients presenting for emergency care and triages based on history, physical assessment and chief complaint.
  • Provides comprehensive nursing care for acutely ill and/or critically ill patients.
  • Administers therapeutic measures as prescribed by the physician to include, but not limited to, medication administration, intravenous fluids, blood transfusions, treatments and maintains those measures taken which are ongoing in nature.
  • Operates and monitors specialized equipment.

Measles and Rubella immunization required for selectees born after 1957 and influenza immunization is required for all staff working in Indian Health Service facilities.

Background Investigation: you must undergo a pre-employment fingerprint check and background investigation. Fingerprint results and background investigation documentation must be cleared prior to hire. After you begin your employment, your continued employment is contingent upon the outcome of a complete background investigation as determined by the sensitivity level of your position. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

Note: Employees currently assigned to positions in this occupational series as of September 2017 will be considered to have met the basic requirements for the position occupied.

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):

Education: A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.

Licensure: For all grade levels and positions, applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination. In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

Experience: The work experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. At the GS-9 and above, many positions may require experience in a specialty area of nursing.

GS-7:

Possession of a Bachelor's degree in Nursing and eligibility under the Superior Academic Achievement provision;

OR

Possession of a Bachelor's degree in Nursing and at least one full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-5 grade level):

  • providing professional nursing care to patients, reviewing medical records and administering medication in accordance with instructions, and assisting physicians with procedures;
OR

Possession of a diploma or associate degree in professional nursing and two full years of professional nursing experience:
  • Experience in assessing clinical conditions, recognizing and identifying serious situations, prioritizing, and immediately using clinical judgement in deciding upon proper action, for example, to inform physician and take preplanned measures and/or consulting with charge nurse or preceptor when patient condition warrants.
OR

Completion of at least one full year of graduate education in a professional nursing educational program.

GS-9:

Possession of a Master's degree in professional nursing;

OR

Possession of a diploma, associate degree, or bachelor's degree in Nursing from a professional nursing program and at least one full year of Professional Nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-7 or above):
  • consulting and coordinating with healthcare team members to assess, plan, implement, or evaluate emergency room patient care plans.
GS-10:

Possession of a diploma, associate degree, or bachelor's degree in Nursing from a professional nursing program and at least one full year of Professional Nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-9 or above):
  • Prepare emergency room patients for and assist with examinations or treatments.
  • Specialized experience managing the care of patients who present to the Emergency Department with a wide variety of problems ranging from non-urgent complaints to life-threatening emergent conditions.
  • Experience in assessing the immediate needs of patients, prioritizing and organizing the plan of care from Emergency Department admission through discharge.
  • Experience performing charge nurse and/or team lead responsibilities.

Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave.

This position is covered by a Bargaining Unit.

Recruitment or relocation incentives and/or Permanent Change of Station may be authorized and is subject to availability and service unit approval. If offered, you will be required to sign a one (1) year service agreement. Failure to fulfill the service agreement will result in repayment of the incentive.
