Alaska is a place of extremes - rugged, untouched wilderness, 24 hours of daylight in the summer, 20 hours of darkness in the winter. The cost of living is the 6th highest in the United States. Due to the remote location, moving expenses are also much higher than moves within the contiguous United States (CONUS). If selected for this position, you will be required to relocate to Alaska within a reasonable amount of time at your own expense. You will serve as a Police Officer carrying out responsibilities where most work is performed on Veterans Affairs Departmental properties, which includes any properties owned, leased, or licensed to VA.
You will provide services routinely at all segments of VA facilities located over large geographical areas, some of which may be in different states, counties, municipalities, or townships.
You will protect Veterans, volunteers, and others on Departmental property, U.S. officials, other individuals, and him or herself during any given situation against threats to personal safety when force becomes necessary to enforce laws and regulations.
You will advise individuals of their (Miranda, Weingarten, Garrity, etc.) rights, and protects the constitutional and civil rights of persons.
You will conduct investigations with a nexus to VA, prisoner transports, patient search and recovery, life-saving efforts, disaster response and recovery, asset protection during transit, training, and other matters.
You will perform drug and contraband intervention techniques and provides training to those areas where contraband identification and knowledge is imperative for the staff.
You will enforce traffic rules and regulations, including those related to speeding and reckless operation of vehicles while impaired or intoxicated.
You will preserve crime scenes, summons additional emergency response personnel, communicates risks, facilitates access and coordinates, initiates or assists with partial or total evacuations.
You will protect high-value VA assets, personnel and materials and ensures continuity of operations. Proactively executes daily Random Anti-terrorism Measures (RAM) and supplemental anti-terrorism measures during increased threat conditions.
You will initiate investigative stops on suspicious and potentially dangerous persons and suspicious vehicles independently.
You will respond to highly dangerous and active crimes in progress and responsible to make independent decisions and take immediate steps to preserve life and property without supervision.
Work Schedule: Rotating 12 hour shifts 4 days on 3 days off - 3 days on 4 days off.

Physical Requirements: The work requires, on a regular and recurring basis, considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as running, frequent climbing of multiple flights of stairs, and carrying items weighing over 50 pounds. It requires stamina, physical agility, dexterity, and the strength to pursue, apprehend or detain persons who are often uncooperative, assaultive, or armed.
The duties of these positions require moderate to arduous physical exertion and/or duties of a hazardous nature.
