This position starts at a salary of $94,373.00 (GS-13, Step 1) to $122,683.00 (GS-13, Step 10) with promotion potential to $122,683 (GS-13 Step 10).

Salary: Salary listed reflects the rest of U.S. scale and, if applicable, will be adjusted to meet the locality pay or cost of living expenses of the duty location upon selection.

Typical duties include:

  • Serving as an expert and technical consultant in all areas of industrial hygiene
  • Conducting environmental health and safety surveys, inspections, and programs
  • Preparing technical reports citing health hazards and provides recommended actions for control or elimination
  • Providing guidance and training to service safety and occupational health personnel
  • Planning and overseeing the health, safety and environmental compliance functions
  • Providing technical advice to meet emergency response and other operational needs as they arise

Qualifications

Basic Requirements
The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

A. A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; or
B. A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; or
C. Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH).

Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable. Copies of your current registration, transcripts or degree must be submitted at the time of your application.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement listed above, applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience described below.

GS-13:
You qualify at the GS-13 level if you have least one (1) year of experience conducting studies and surveys of a variety of industrial environmental problems; the acquisition of quantitative and qualitative data, and the measurement of exposures for a variety of chemical, physical and biological stresses; analysis of the data acquired and the prediction of probable effects of exposures on health and well-being of workers and the selection and recommendation of appropriate controls, including management, medical, engineering, education or training, and personal protective equipment.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Residency: There is a residency requirement for all applicants not currently employed by CBP. Individuals are required to have physically resided in the United States or its protectorates (as declared under international law) for at least three of the last five years. If you do not meet the residency requirement and you have been physically located in a foreign location for more than two of the last five years, you may request an exception to determine if you are eligible for a residency waiver by meeting one or more of the following conditions:

  • Working for the U.S. Government as a federal civilian or as a member of the military
  • A dependent who was authorized to accompany a federal civilian or member of the military who was working for the U.S. government
  • Participation in a study abroad program sponsored by a U.S. affiliated college or university
  • Working as a contractor, intern, consultant or volunteer supporting the U.S. government
Probationary Period: All employees new to the federal government must serve a one year probationary period during the first year of his/her initial permanent federal appointment to determine fitness for continued employment. Current and former federal employees may be required to serve or complete a probationary period.
