Specialty Medicine - Infectious Disease RNis expected to execute position responsibilities that demonstrate leadership, experience, and creative approaches to management of complex patient care. S/he demonstrates Leading and organizing delivery of care to assure continuity of care and peer accountability for practice, including access to care and discharge planning. Using advanced clinical knowledge/judgment to promote staff involvement in planning, decision-making, and evaluating outcomes, functioning as an expert in clinical practice and/or areas r elated to the assigned roles and responsibilities, Systematically evaluating current practice, and formulating outcomes for groups of patients and/or organizational processes within an area of expertise, Guiding, developing, and supporting staff from a leadership perspective, and Using professional standards of care, scientific evidence, and practice to evaluate programs and/ or service activities.

  • The registered nurse is an expert nurse who demonstrates expertise in leadership at the systems level that is sustainable.
  • Infectious Disease RN is a member of Specialty Medicine Service whose role is to coordinate care of the patient population, who are scheduled for diagnostic tests, medical evaluations, biopsies and surgeries. Care is provided to patients with the goal of achieving quality patient care by improving clinical outcomes, increasing continuity of care, and minimizing health care costs.
  • S/he is expected to perform data collection and analysis for the purpose of improving care to patient groups, maximizing utilization of resources and enhancing renal and neurological services in Specialty Medicine.
  • The primary outcome of the functions of this position is ensuring patient safety along the care continuum as patients navigate through services at the VA ACC and other VA medical centers.
  • The Specialty Medicine RN is responsible for working in close collaboration with providers, the Chief, Specialty Medicine, and nurse managers as needed. S/he possesses the ability to provide a comprehensive physical assessment and triage patients in direct encounters and by telephone in response to the patient's expressed needs. Care hand-off is communicated using SBAR
(Situation/Background/Assessment/Recommendations) communication technique.

Specific functions in this position include but not limited to:
  • Perform Point of Care Testing
  • Reviews consults, Collaborates with other VA ACC services for information necessary for patient's care.
  • May assist with patient examinations and be present during patient visits for initiation of contact and coordination for patients in clinics as needed.
  • Coordinates completion of all ordered tests and secures results prior to patient visit with provider.
  • Establishes contacts and relationships with other VA medical centers to secure pre - admission testing and surgery appointments.
  • Maintains continuous contact with patient/family regarding scheduled tests, surgery, and follow-up care, or changes in the treatment plan.
  • Facilitates communications between clinics, and other providers as indicated, including scheduling focused meetings to discuss care and/or treatment for complex patients.

The Specialty Medicine-Infectious Disease RN is responsible for demonstrating and maintaining full competency in the use, pre-treatment of reusable medical equipment (RME). S/he must ensure that the appropriate Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) and manufacturer's instructions are followed for any step in the use and pre-treatment of RME in which s/he is involved.

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:30am to 4:00pm possible weekends and holidays.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 11/10/2022.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship.
  • Education:
    • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant. [NOTE: See exception in subparagraph (b) below for candidates who are enrolled in a MSN Bridge Program.]
      • The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), previously known as the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC)
      • OR
      • The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
    • The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. In these programs, students are given a certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX and should submit this certification to VA prior to appointment. Students do not earn a BSN, but receive a MSN degree upon completion of course work. A copy of the MSN transcript must be provided to VA. Bridge programs that confer a master's degree also fully meet the education requirement, even though a Bachelor's Degree is not awarded.
    • OR
    • In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active, and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
  • Registration: A registered nurse (RN) will have a current, full, active and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the U.S. or in the District of Columbia. The appointing official may waive this registration if the RN is to serve in a country other than the U.S. and the RN has registration in that country (e.g., Philippines). The RN must maintain a current, full, active and unrestricted registration to continue employment with VA.
  • English Language Proficiency: RNs appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).
Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
  • Nurse I Level I
    • An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse I Level II
    • An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience;
    • OR
    • An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience;
    • OR
    • A Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse I Level III
    • An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience;
    • OR
    • An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience;
    • OR
    • A BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience;
    • OR
    • A Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse II
    • A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience;
    • OR
    • ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience;
    • OR
    • A Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience;
    • OR
    • A Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse III
    • Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience;
    • OR
    • A Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience.

Physical Requirements: This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, and sitting. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing. S/he may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. S/he must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, and able to shift priorities based on patient needs. Applicants must possess the mental and physical ability to satisfactorily perform the duties of the proposed assignment. Physical requirements may involve lifting, carrying, pulling, pushing, reaching above shoulder, walking, standing, sitting, kneeling, and repeated bending. S/he must complete annual Employee Health requirements, such as TB screening or testing on hire, as a condition of employment. Additional information

Note: Must have Basic Life Support (BLS) certification prior to assuming clinical duties. The BLS requirement is satisfied by successfully completing an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS Healthcare Provider Course or Military Training Network (MTN). BLS courses are normally offered within 1-5 days of entry on duty. No online certifications will be accepted.

Annual leave shall accrue for full-time Nurses, and Nurse Anesthetists at the rate of 8 hours for each full biweekly pay period.
