Duties

Help

The Partners for Fish & Wildlife (PFW) program work with private landowners to improve fish and wildlife habitat on their lands. We are leaders in voluntary, community-based stewardship for fish and wildlife conservation. Partnerships are key, and to accomplish this work we team up with private conservation organizations, state and federal agencies, and tribes.

The incumbent serves as a Fish and Wildlife Biologist (Private Lands), responsible for independently identifying and engaging key stakeholders, developing and implementing strategic communication, understanding diverse human values and interests in relation to habitat restoration, and carrying out all field-level financial and technical assistance and habitat restoration aspects of the PFW program. The incumbent is actively involved with PFW on the ground habitat restoration and enhancement projects in the Great Basin, is responsible for delivery of technical assistance related to program activities benefitting Federal Trust Resources, and implementation of the 1985 Food Security Act, as amended (Farm Bill). Our work in the sagebrush ecosystem involves projects to reduce and eliminate threats of fire and invasive species and to enhance and restore sagebrush upland, wetland, and stream habitats for Federal Trust Species.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for this position you must possess both the Basic Requirement and Minimum Qualification.

Basic Requirement:

  1. A Bachelor's or higher degree in the biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR
  2. A combination of education and experience which includes courses equivalent to a major in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position plus appropriate experience or additional education comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of a full 4-year course of study with a major in the appropriate field (as listed above).

Minimum Qualification [GS-9]
  1. One year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility equivalent to grade GS-7 in the Federal service. Experience may include (1) developing and maintaining effective working relationships and liaison with private landowners, tribes, other federal, state, and local agencies, and the public regarding habitat restoration; (2) assisting in the development or evaluation of habitat protection or enhancement planning documents and biological reports; and/or (3) participating in habitat or conservation and recovery for a wide variety of ecosystems. OR
  2. At least two full years (36 semester hours) of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Master's or equivalent graduate degree, or a conferred Master's or equivalent graduate degree, from an accredited college or university with a major study in a field closely related to fish and wildlife biology. OR
  3. A combination of education and experience as described in 1 and 2 above which together equals 100% of the requirement

Minimum Qualification [GS-11]
  1. One year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility equivalent to grade GS-9 in the Federal service. Experience may include (1) developing and maintaining effective working relationships and liaison with private landowners, tribes, other federal, state, and local agencies, and the public regarding habitat restoration; (2) assisting in the development or evaluation of habitat protection or enhancement planning documents and biological reports; (3) coordinating the efforts of multiple personnel involved in habitat or conservation and recovery for a wide variety of ecosystems; (4) formulating recommendations to avoid or minimize adverse effects on listed species; and/or (5) preparing briefing statements, reports, correspondence, presentations, etc. OR
  2. At least three full years (54 semester hours) of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or a conferred Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, from an accredited college or university with a major study in a field closely related to fish and wildlife biology. OR
  3. A combination of education and experience as described in 1 and 2 above which together equals 100% of the requirement

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

PASS/FAIL COURSES: If more than 10 percent of your undergraduate course work (credit hours) were taken on a pass/fail basis, your claim of superior academic achievement must be based upon class standing or membership in an honor society.

GRADUATE EDUCATION: One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.

  • Knowledge of the biological characteristics, conditions, and interrelationships of aquatic and terrestrial biota, or of fish and wildlife resources and ecological systems (to include knowledge of wetland, grassland, and riparian restoration techniques, procedures, and applications, and their effective promotion).
  • Knowledge of administrative and staff level work.
  • Skill in coordinating activities with other government agencies, nongovernment conservation organizations, agribusiness organizations, citizen groups, and private landowners.
  • Skill in building partnerships and negotiating with other organizations and private landowners.
