Duties

Help

Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Creates catalog records in partnership with unit stakeholders for collection items selected and received as part of AVMPI.  Creates, enhances and/or corrects collection records.
  • Labels and adds unique identifiers (e.g. barcodes) to individual collection items to assist in tracking materials through a standard workflow. Tracks progress using supported software.  
  • Identifies and inspects various forms of audiovisual analog legacy formats, including film, audio, and video elements, to evaluate physical condition and determine stabilization needs of media elements for digitization.  
  • Performs conservation work on collection materials, to include treatment, cleaning, and rehousing, to stabilize and prepare collection materials for digitization. 
  • Coordinates with unit stakeholders to receive collections selected for digitization and preservation.  Assists in identifying formats and in determining appropriateness of collections selected for preservation by AVMPI.

Qualifications

Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-7 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system. 

For this position Specialized experience is defined as:

GS-09:  Processing museum analog audiovisual collection materials to include the tracking, condition assessment, stabilization, conservation, cataloging, and storage of materials in preparation for in-house digitization; preparing collections to vendors to include the packing, tracking, and receipt; and experience using museum collection information systems. 

OR; 

2 full academic years of progressively higher level graduate education or master's or equivalent graduate degree related to the position; 

OR;

Education

Education can be used to substitute specialized experience for this position at the GS-09 level.  At the GS-09 level applicant can substitute one year of specialized experience with 2 full academic years of progressively higher level graduate education or master's or equivalent graduate degree related to the position; OR Equivalent combinations of education and experience.

Additional information

Federal Term appointment. This appointment may be extended up to three years.

This position is included in the bargaining unit.

Applicants for this position may be evaluated in multiple stages. The first stage is an evaluation of your responses to the online multiple-choice questions that assess your experience, education, and/or training for the job related competencies below:

  1. Technical competency in the cataloging and creation of digital records, including the generation of descriptive and technical metadata following provided standards, for a wide range of audiovisual analog collections.
  2. Integrity by following applicable professional standards and established procedures when conducting conservation and stabilization treatments for audio, video, and film collections. 
  3. Project Management in the ability to prioritize work tasks that support goals and be accountable to perform the necessary actions to complete work in a timely fashion. 

Applicants who meet or exceed minimum qualifications will be assigned to one of three category groups based on job-related criteria:

Best Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and excels in most of the job related competencies above.

Better Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and satisfies most of the job related competencies above.

Good Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements, but does not satisfy most of the job related competencies above to a substantive degree.

This category rating process does not add veterans' preference points or apply the "rule of three", but protects the rights of veterans by placing them ahead of non-preference eligibles within each category. A selecting official may make selections from the highest quality category (Best Category) provided no preference eligible in that category is passed over to select a non-preference eligible in that category unless the requirements of 5 U.S.C. 3317(b) or 3318(b) are satisfied. Preference eligibles who meet minimum qualification requirements and who have a compensable service-connected disability of at least 10 percent must be listed in the highest quality category, except when the position being filled is scientific or professional at the GS-9 grade level or higher.
