Duties

Help

As a Maintenance Worker your duties will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Repairs vehicles by cleaning, installing, or replacing worn or defective parts such as spark plugs, wheel cylinders, mufflers, and brake pads.
  • Adjusts parts, performs tune-up on vehicles, and periodic maintenance including changing oil and greasing points, tightening connections, replacing hoses or belts, and changing and rotating tires.
  • Performs routine preventive maintenance on heating systems and refrigeration and air-conditioning units.
  • Examines and operationally tests electronic, pneumatic, and mechanical systems for proper operation, fluid levels, cycling, and unusual noises.
  • Operates heavy equipment such as front-end loader, grader, or bulldozer to move materials such as sand, gravel, earth, or refuse.
  • Maneuvers material to build dams or dikes, cover or fill pits and ditches, or place in dump trucks.
  • Maintains and repairs electrical systems such as lighting and power fixtures, wiring, fire or water alarm systems, and emergency power systems.
  • Installs outlets, switches, light fixtures, regulators, and circuit breakers.
  • Assembles, repairs, modifies, replaces, and installs electrical components and performs basic tests for shorts, continuity, resistance, voltage, opens, insulation breakdowns, grounds, and defective wiring and connections.
  • Plans and performs welding and sheet metal construction.
  • Using hand or power tools, makes, assembles, or repairs items using rivets, bolts, or seaming, or welds or solders edges together.
  • Follows safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations, and maintains a safe and clean work environment.
  • Uses and maintains tools and equipment, records inventory and maintenance, and reports or documents equipment damage or loss.

Although no specific amount of experience, education or training is required, applicants must meet a minimum level of ability in relation to the position and the Assessment Questionnaire in order to be rated qualified for consideration. To be qualified candidates must meet any screen out element(s) listed at an "acceptable" level, and must achieve an average rating of at least "acceptable" on all of the elements. Only education, training, or experience acquired before the closing date of this announcement will be considered.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The screen out element for this position is: A WG-08 is expected to: 1) operate a variety of heavy equipment (e.g., agricultural tractor with implements, excavator, wheeled loader, skid steer, backhoe, road grader, bulldozer, dump truck, etc.) in close quarters or challenging field conditions as required; 2) tune-up, adjust and repair vehicles, heavy equipment and building systems (e.g., heating, refrigeration, HVAC, etc.); 3) use electrical, mechanical, carpentry, plumbing, welding, painting, or other trades skills to maintain, repair or construct a variety of buildings, structures, systems or equipment; 4) performing general maintenance tasks (e.g., welding, wiring, plumbing, carpentry, flooring, painting, or other trades) to maintain the repair the operation of an organization's buildings, equipment and facilities.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.
