Duties

Help

As a Biological Science Technician you will work in support of biological programs responsible for conserving fish, wildlife, plants, and their habitats. You will be responsible for a variety of routine procedural tasks or one or more complex duties related to regular and recurring technical work. Duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assists with performing biological studies for determining the manner and extent to which wildlife populations are affected by management activities. Uses field equipment including cameras, GPS equipment, binoculars, rangefinders and computers in order to capture wildlife survey data or for other records. Independently identifies and collects data for studies. Logs samples/data to be used for analysis.
  • Surveys and observes avian populations, looking for abundance, behavior, habitat, sex and age structure, and seasonal movements.
  • Participates in multifaceted fish population studies, including carrying out a variety of research and survey methods, analyzing established data, and monitoring environmental elements related to conservation, management, and/or control of fish.
  • Participates in multifaceted plant studies, including carrying out a variety of research and survey methods, analyzing established data, and monitoring environmental elements such as temperature, humidity, etc., and how it impacts plant health.
  • Surveys location for invasive species populations. Works with the biologists to outline a plan to minimize or remove
    invasive species. Assists with invasive species removal projects, recording and submitting accomplishment data on the process of
    technical assistance and habitat restoration activities.
  • Enter, organize and perform preliminary analysis of collected data, using standard statistical methods in preparation of reports.
  • Assists team as needed for general tasks around of the duty station/office. Loads and unloads materials and equipment, cleans grounds, collects and disposes of refuse and performs a variety of light maintenance and housekeeping tasks involving the use of hand and power tools and equipment.

Minimum Qualification [GS-5]
A. I have one year of full-time specialized experience equivalent to the GS-4 grade level in the federal service, or equivalent non-Federal experience. Examples of specialized experience may include: experience assisting with wildlife population surveys; capturing, handling, and tagging a variety of wildlife; assisting with the collection of seeds, propagation, handling, and caring for federally listed plants or host plants of federally listed species; Capturing fish for fish sampling; collecting water quality data; Identifying invasive species and organisms; data collection and recording. NOTE: Your resume must contain sufficient information, e.g., mm/yy to mm/yy, work schedule, duties performed, etc., for each period of work for consideration.

B. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours of courses must have been directly related to the position to be filled. NOTE: Submit transcripts.

C. I have a combination of specialized experience (as in A above) and education (as in B above), when prorated, combine to meet the qualification requirements of this position. Experience and education are each computed as percentages of their requirements and must equal 100 percent when combined. Only education beyond the second year is creditable to meet this standard. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

PROOF OF EDUCATION: All applicants who are using education or a combination of education and experience to qualify must submit copies of official or unofficial transcripts which include grades, credit hours earned, major(s), grade point average or class ranking, institution name, and student name. If any required coursework is not easily recognizable on transcripts, or if you believe a portion of a particular course can be credited toward meeting an educational requirement, you must also provide a memorandum on letterhead from the institution's registrar, dean, or other appropriate official stating the percentage of the course that should be considered to meet the requirement and the equivalent number of units. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable; however, if you are selected for the position, you will be required to produce the original official transcripts.

PASS/FAIL COURSES: If more than 10 percent of your undergraduate course work (credit hours) were taken on a pass/fail basis, your claim of superior academic achievement must be based upon class standing or membership in an honor society.

GRADUATE EDUCATION: One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.
