Pathways Internship positions provide for development and training. Assignments become more responsible as incumbent increases knowledge and skills through work experience and academic training.
As a Pathways Student Trainee (Mathematics & Statistics), you will:
Learn the scope and foundation of statistical principles and practices and assist the Bureau of the Actuary and Research in completing day-to-day operations.
Research issues to provide general mathematical and statistical services
Complete on-the-job and formal training as identified in your individual development plan and perform developmental assignments with the assistance of a higher-graded employee or supervisor within the bureau.
Assignments are made with the objective of providing challenging opportunities, and developing mathematic and statistical abilities, skills and ingenuity. Work assignments should be tailored to apply educational theory learned in the formal school setting with business projects to gain effective business experiences.

Interns must meet the following eligibility requirements:
Be accepted for enrollment or enrolled and seeking a degree or certificate in a qualifying educational institution on a half- to full-time basis (as determined by the educational institution);

Meet the definition of a student throughout the duration of their appointments;
Meet agency-specific requirements as specified in the agency's Participant Agreement with the Intern;

Must sign a Pathways Internship Program Participant Agreement;

Must maintain status as a current student;

Must furnish course registration information at the start of each school term; and
Must provide verification of academic status (transcript) at the end of each academic term.
Minimum Qualifications:
For Grade GS-03:
Completion of 1 full academic year of post-high school study with a major field of study in mathematics, statistics, computer science, data science, actuarial science, or a related field.
For Grade GS-04:
Completion of 2 full academic years of post-high school study or an associate's degree with a major field of study in mathematics, statistics, computer science, data science, actuarial science, or a related field.
Only experience and education obtained by the closing date of this announcement will be considered.

This is an Excepted Service Appointment. This is an Excepted Service appointment. As a part of the Pathways Internship Program, the appointment may be extended until the selectee's educational program requirements have been completed. The student intern may be converted, without a break in service to a term (time-limited) or permanent appointment upon graduation, provided they are a US citizen who has worked at least 640 hours in an appropriate program and receive a favorable recommendation from the supervisor for retention. There is no guarantee of a permanent position following this internship. The selectee is on a trial period while on a Pathways Internship appointment.
