Help

Inpatient Emergency Services Division (IESD) (Portland)

  • 5D is a neurology and general medicine unit. Patient populations include: CBA, neurological disorders, spinal surgery, seizure telemetry, cardiac telemetry, head and neck disorders, CNS tumors, ventilator dependent patients, and other complex medical conditions.
  • 6D is a medical unit specializing in general medicine and hematology/oncology, including cardiac telemetry and chemotherapy. Patient populations include: cancer, AIDS, GI conditions, liver disease, and COPD. Preferred Experience: Performing venipuncture and IV placements.
  • 7C is surgical unit specializing in vascular and urology surgical specialties.
  • 8D is a medical/surgical unit specializing in cardiac monitoring, women's health care and peritoneal dialysis.
  • 9D is a surgical unit specializing in all surgical specialties, cardiac telemetry, and kidney and liver transplantation. Patient populations include: all surgical specialties and subspecialties and pre-and post-transplant care.
  • CCU (Critical Care Unit) is a medical, surgical and coronary care unit. Patient populations include: various medical conditions, cardiovascular, pulmonary, GI conditions and post-surgical care for cardiac surgery, liver/renal transplants, vascular, orthopedic and neurosurgery. Preferred Experience: Critical Care experience, specialty certification and/or 2 or more years medical surgical experience.
  • ED (Emergency Department) provides urgent and emergency care to eligible Veterans. Staff provides triage and nursing care for a patient population which includes: cardiovascular disease, pulmonary disease, diabetes, substance abuse, psychiatric and minor trauma. May be assigned responsibility as a preceptor, charge nurse or unit shift leader. Preferred Experience: Critical Care or Emergency Department and/or 2 or more years medical surgical experience.
  • PICC (Peripherally-Inserted Central Catheter) acts as a consultant and expert in IV therapy modalities. Responsible for the ongoing line insertions and maintenance, patient education, trouble-shooting and removal during the patient's episode of care. Preferred Experience: PICC and/or Ultrasound guided IV placement experience.
Division of Hospital and Specialty Medicine (Portland)
  • Dialysis coordinates and delivers care to dialysis patients by performing acute and chronic hemodialysis modalities (iHD, SLED) for critically ill patients in a variety of treatment locations/settings. Promotes desired clinical outcomes for ESRD patients in accordance with the End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) Conditions for Coverage established by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and National Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative (KDOQI) guidelines.
  • Endoscopy Unit provides therapeutic and diagnostic endoscopic procedures including: colonoscopy, esophagogastroduodenoscopy, endoscopic ultrasound, endoscopic retrograde cholangiogram pancreatography, sigmoidoscopy, and percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube placement, and manometry procedures. Preferred Experience: Endoscopy and sedation experience.
  • OMU (Outpatient Medical Unit) provides care to patients requiring diagnostic testing, various infusion treatments including, but not limited to Rituximab and blood transfusions, Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) treatments as well as patients recovering from procedures requiring moderate sedation. Preferred Experience: Outpatient procedures: ED, ICU, Cardiac Telemetry.
Quality, Safety and Value (Portland or Vancouver) Positions may be eligible for telework on an ad-hoc basis.
  • Performance Improvement delivers Performance Improvement techniques to program and services throughout the Medical Center, including Lean, Six Sigma, Coaching, Project Management, and Training. Preferred Experience: Lean Six Sigma Certificate.
  • Consultant Regulatory compliance, chart reviews, Joint Commission, OIG. Plans, organizes and implements QM programs that address improvement opportunities. Analyzes quality of care through data collection, interpretation and reporting of findings with appropriate recommendations. Preferred Experience: RN, surgical/invasive experience regulatory, compliance, CPHQ.
Rehabilitation and Long Term Care Division (Vancouver)
CLC (Community Living Center) Inpatient rehab/skilled nursing facility. Patient populations include chronic or sub-acute medical conditions - including chronically ventilated and sub-acute rehabilitation. Preferred Experience: 2 years nursing, ventilator experience.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
  • Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience.

Physical Requirements: Heavy lifting (45 lbs), straight pulling (6 hrs), pushing (2 hrs), reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, walking (6 hrs), standing (2 hrs), repeated bending (6 hrs), ability to distinguish basic colors, and hearing (aid permitted).
