Duties

Help

1. Technical expert for meteorological modeling within the flight. Identifies unit-level requirements for new meteorological modeling systems to enhance current or projected requirements.

2. Expert in the usage of complex mesoscale models and transport and diffusion models; in particular, the Weather Research and Forecast model (WRF), the Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) model, the Second-order Closure Integrated Puff (SCIPUFF) model, and these models' use on High Performance Computing (HPC).

3. National level expert for work contracted with major university meteorology departments, the National Center for Atmospheric Research, and other agencies on state-of-the-art meteorological modeling research and development (R&D).

4. Uses atmospheric transport and dispersion models to analyze the transport of trace gases.

5. Attends national and international conferences on atmospheric modeling to assess changes in modeling technology and analyzes research performed by various national laboratories, government agencies, and private contractors for the purpose of enhancing analysis and evaluation methodologies.

Qualifications

This is a GG-13 position in the Defense Civilian Intelligence Personnel System (DCIPS). The GG-13 duties for the "Professional" work category are at the "Full Performance" work level and are equivalent to those at the GS-13 level. The selectee's salary will be set within the 13 grade equivalent to a GS/GG grade based on the selectee's qualifications in relation to the job.

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Professional and Scientific Positions.

BASIC REQUIREMENT:

  1. Degree: meteorology, atmospheric science, or other natural science major that included:
    1. At least 24 semester (36 quarter) hours of credit in meteorology/atmospheric science including a minimum of:
      1. Six semester hours of atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamics;*
      2. Six semester hours of analysis and prediction of weather systems (synoptic/mesoscale);
      3. Three semester hours of physical meteorology; and
      4. Two semester hours of remote sensing of the atmosphere and/or instrumentation.
    2. Six semester hours of physics, with at least one course that includes laboratory sessions.*
    3. Three semester hours of ordinary differential equations.*
    4. At least nine semester hours of course work appropriate for a physical science major in any combination of three or more of the following: physical hydrology, statistics, chemistry, physical oceanography, physical climatology, radiative transfer, aeronomy, advanced thermodynamics, advanced electricity and magnetism, light and optics, and computer science.
* There is a prerequisite or corequisite of calculus for course work in atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamics, physics, and differential equations. Calculus courses must be appropriate for a physical science major.

OR
  1. Combination of education and experience -- course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Your resume must reflect the quality level of experience which demonstrates the possession of the knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies necessary for successful job performance required for this position. Examples of creditable experience include: Broad knowledge of concepts and principles in the field of atmospheric science; knowledge in regional/mesoscale modeling and atmospheric transport and diffusion is required. Must have extensive experience using these models on HPC systems; knowledge of advanced meteorological data assimilation; and experience in community accepted best practices for atmospheric forecasting of gases and other effluents. Note: Creditable experience may include previous military experience, experience gained in the private sector, or experience gained in another government agency.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:

1. Mastery of concepts and principles in the field of atmospheric science. Knowledge must be both broad and in depth.

2. Expertise in regional/mesoscale modeling and atmospheric transport and diffusion is required. Must have extensive experience using these models on HPC systems.

3. Extensive knowledge of advanced meteorological data assimilation.

4. Must be able to maintain effective working relationships and interact directly with scientists from varied disciplines (e.g., nuclear engineering, chemistry, and statistics).

5. Experience in community accepted best practices for atmospheric forecasting of gases and other effluents.

6. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

OTHER SIGNIFICANT FACTS PERTAINING TO THIS POSITION ARE: This is a Mission Essential (ME) position performing a Mission Critical Function (MCF) which must continue uninterrupted after the occurrence of an emergency and continued through full resumption of all functions. IAW, DoDI 3020-42, Defense Continuity Programs.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

POSITIVE EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: This position has a positive education requirement.
