Summary

The Office of Audit (OA) is responsible for conducting and supervising audits related to the Department of Labor’s programs and operations; recommending policies for activities designed to promote economy, efficiency, and effectiveness in the administration of the Department’s programs and operations; and preventing and detecting fraud, waste, abuse, and mismanagement in these programs and operations.

Duties

Help

  • Reviews, writes, edits and proofreads narrative and numerical data to help lead and guide audit teams to generate discussion, utilization, and final audit reports and other products.  Works closely with audit teams in the field nationwide in defining the message of each audit report results.  Examples of these other products include OA's portion of the Semiannual Report to Congress and top management challenges, as well as standard operating procedures for audit teams.
  • Ensures that products communicate clearly, convincingly, and tactfully. Analyzes draft products to identify and remove obstacles to clear, convincing, and tactful communication, such as: faulty reasoning; poor organization of evidence provided as support for conclusions stated; lack of enough evidence to prove or support stated conclusions or gaps in logic or evidence.
  • Ensures that reports, documents and correspondence are well written, appropriate in tone and style, professional in format and appearance, consistent with current OA policies and practices, error free, and otherwise meet the high standards set forth for written documents.
  • Performs necessary research and validation of facts required to ensure accuracy and consistency with policy and program directions.
  • Maintains technical expertise throughout professional and technical changes and evolution in the design and production of written products, particularly in respect to electronic publishing systems, to take advantage of new techniques in typesetting, editing, design, printing, and other related areas.

*Duty station will be determined based on the current location of selectee. The salary range listed reflects the GS base rate (not including locality). Upon selection, the salary will be adjusted to include locality.

Applicants must meet time-in-grade, time-after-competitive-appointment and qualifications requirements within 30 calendar days after the closing date of the vacancy to be eligible for consideration for selection.

Qualifications

Applicants must have 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, GS-11, in the Federal Service.  

Specialized experience for this position includes the following:  Operating as a communication specialist for an organization.  Collaborating with teams throughout the project lifecycle by assisting with drafting  documents of varying lengths and complexity, involving technical, non-technical and / or sensitive information.  Planning and development of coherent and consistent message in reports and other deliverables intended for various stakeholders groups, both internal and external.  Preparing written product to be: clear, accurate, objective, logical, well-organized, persuasive, and understandable to a general audience.  Conducting project-related research into government policies, programs, rules and regulations, news media, as well as U.S. legal codes and laws.  Reviewing draft reports, memos, and other material written by colleagues at different stages, and providing edits and comments.  Editing documents for grammar, punctuation, spelling, and sentence structure issues.  Proofreading documents prior to final publication or distribution.  Ensuring documents are meeting organization’s publication standards.  Using written communication as a means to achieve continuous improvement within an organization.

- This position will not be filled until the Department's Placement Assistance Programs have been fully utilized.

Education

There is no substitution of education for the required specialized experience at the GS-12 level.
