As an OUTREACH AND COMMUNICATIONS SPECIALIST your duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • The Upper Colorado River Endangered Fish Recovery Program is a public private partnership that recovers four ESA listed fish species in the Colorado River while allowing water development to continue. The Recovery Program is seeking talented, experienced applicants with strong partnership-building skills, a firm grounding in outreach and education techniques, and excellent written and oral communication skills. Successful applicants exhibit foundational skills such as integrity, a learning mindset, empathy, courage, responsibility, and professionalism.
  • This position is charged with developing, implementing, and evaluating a comprehensive outreach, information, and education program with particular emphasis on maintaining effective relationships with Recovery Program partners and stakeholders while recruiting new allies to support recovery of the Colorado River endangered fishes.
  • The position produces or manages production of outreach materials including written, visual, print, social and web content to effectively distribute key messages about the Recovery Program to various audiences. The incumbent will need to write and edit a wide range of materials for Recovery Program actions, some of which may be controversial and sensitive, ensuring that such materials communicate Recovery Program key messages in a captivating, accurate, clear, and concise manner.
  • The position works with other Recovery Program staff and partners to plan and hold public meetings, open houses and present in other public forums to maintain and enhance public support for the Program.
  • Supports the 10-member partnership of the Upper Colorado River Endangered Fish Recovery Program by appropriately involving and informing Program participants and stakeholders of recovery actions and providing staff support to Recovery Program committees and the Service.

In order to qualify for this position you must possess the Minimum Qualification.

Minimum Qualification [GS-12]

  1. One year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility equivalent to grade GS-11 in the Federal service. Experience may include (1) Creating outreach materials related to natural resource protection and conservation to inform and educate the public and promote program priorities; (2) collaborating with internal and external agency partners and stakeholders to accomplish mission and goals; (3) Developing outreach strategies to address and communicate the need to conserve and protect fish/wildlife, their habitats, and to meet subsistence and recreational activities for the American people; and (4) Developing, writing, updating, and editing products for print, online, and digital platforms including: reports, newsletters, brochures, video clips, social media material, infographics and web sites.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
