This position is located in the Access Smithsonian (AS) within the Office of the Under Secretary for Administration, (OUSA) Smithsonian Institution (SI).  AS is a catalyst for consistent and integrated inclusive design that provides meaningful access to the SI's museums and content for visitors with disabilities. AS is committed to ensuring that the principles of inclusive design inform all aspects of the Smithsonian’s interaction with its visitors ‘ in-person and virtual ‘

Duties

Help

As an Inclusive Design Specialist, you will oversee the development, execution, evaluation and continued elaboration of a comprehensive program of inclusive design across the Institution. You will also perform the following duties:

  • Develops a curriculum based on the principles of inclusive design for Smithsonian staff, in particular those staff who are responsible for exhibition design and fabrication, including digital interactives or public program design and execution. 

  • Uses the designed curriculum, trains SI staff in the principles of inclusive design, teaching some classes personally as well as engaging outside speakers who are experts in the field.

  • Continuously updates and refines the inclusive design training program (IDTP) with the eventual goal of creating a certificate program in inclusive design.

  • Provides technical review, assistance, and consultation to facilities staff and to museum staff during the SD 410 process.

  • Monitors the use of the Smithsonian Accessibility Innovation Fund (SAIF)s, reviews unit-submitted reports, and compiles a comprehensive annual report for submission to the Director, Access Smithsonian, and senior Smithsonian management.

Qualifications

You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system. For this position Specialized experience is defined as developing and delivering accessible and/or inclusive exhibition and technology design curriculum; evaluating exhibitions and programs with disabled advisors; assisting in the training on inclusive exhibition and program design; providing technical reviews, assistance, and consultation; and supporting new inclusive design development.  

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week

  • Skill in written communication, particularly the ability to develop planning documents and proposals, including creating a curriculum in inclusive exhibition and program design.

  • Skill in communicating complex concepts in a clear and concise manner, including the ability to deliver training to Smithsonian staff in the principles of inclusive design

  • Knowledge of the principles of inclusive design.

  • Skill in documenting inclusive design in evaluations.

Applicants who meet or exceed minimum qualifications will be assigned to one of three category groups based on job-related criteria:

Best Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and excels in most of the job related competencies above.

Better Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and satisfies most of the job related competencies above.

Good Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements, but does not satisfy most of the job related competencies above to a substantive degree.

This category rating process does not add veterans' preference points or apply the "rule of three", but protects the rights of veterans by placing them ahead of non-preference eligibles within each category. A selecting official may make selections from the highest quality category (Best Category) provided no preference eligible in that category is passed over to select a non-preference eligible in that category unless the requirements of 5 U.S.C. 3317(b) or 3318(b) are satisfied. Preference eligibles who meet minimum qualification requirements and who have a compensable service-connected disability of at least 10 percent must be listed in the highest quality category, except when the position being filled is scientific or professional at the GS-9 grade level or higher.
