Duties

Help

As a Health Communications Specialist for Maternal and Child Health Bureau, Office of Policy and Planning, you serve as a health communication and marketing content professional for HHS health, regulatory and human services programs.

Your major duties and responsibilities include:

  • Preparing presentation materials including slides and talking points for meetings.
  • Ensuring products are targeted or tailored for diverse audiences (for example, messages and materials address cultural and socioeconomic challenges to effective communication and consider the diverse interests, needs, concerns, and priorities of population segments).
  • Supporting the health communication and information dissemination efforts for assigned programs and reviews, edits, and clears communication and marketing materials and presentations.
  • Working with senior staff to plan, develop, implement and evaluate informational and educational materials intended to reach broad national audiences.

MINIMUM QUALIFYING SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position and is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, an applicant's one full year of specialized experience must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for successful job performance.

GS-12: Your resume must clearly demonstrate that you have one full year of the minimum qualifying specialized experience comparable in difficulty and responsibility to at least the GS-11 level in the federal service.

Examples of minimum qualifying specialized experience equal to the GS-11 level include performing the following types of tasks on a regular and recurring basis:

  • Communicating public health information through various digital and print formats;
AND
  • Researching and editing a variety of official health communications materials such as presentations, talking points for leadership, speeches.
GS-13: Your resume must clearly demonstrate that you have one full year of the minimum qualifying specialized experience comparable in difficulty and responsibility to at least the GS-12 level in the federal service.

Examples of minimum qualifying specialized experience equal to the GS-12 level include performing the following types of tasks on a regular and recurring basis:
  • Advising leadership on effective communication and marketing approaches to formulate an organizational strategy targeting health issues;
AND
  • Developing communications materials such as presentations, talking points for leadership, speeches.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; community; student; social). If such experience is on a part-time basis, you must provide the average number of hours worked per week as well as the beginning and ending dates of the experience so it can be fully credited.

Applicants whose resumes clearly demonstrate the required minimum qualifying specialized experience will be evaluated based on the occupational assessment competencies listed below. A competency is defined as a measurable pattern of knowledge, skills, abilities, behaviors, and other characteristics that an individual needs to perform work roles or occupational functions.

HEALTH COMMUNICATIONS: Knowledge of the practice, methods and techniques of communicating and disseminating health information to influence personal health choices by improving health literacy via written, oral and visual media.

STRATEGIC PLANNING: Supports organizational goals and objectives in accordance with strategic and/or operations plans.

MESSAGE DEVELOPMENT AND DELIVERY: Uses writing skills and editorial judgment to strategically develop messages for various audiences; and delivers them by evaluating the most appropriate media channel(s) for the particular needs of the target audience.
