Provides leadership, management, and direction for all research-related activities within the division.
Responsible for providing administrative direction and scientific guidance to scientists including staff fellows, visiting scientists, and post-doctoral fellows involved with basic and applied research.
Responsible for research conducted throughout the division.
Primary emphasis of the incumbent's research in the Division of Microbiology is related to food safety with an emphasis on sensitive methods development for foodborne pathogen.
Design studies to better understand the dynamics of bacterial horizontal gene transfer and its impact on antimicrobial resistance and virulence.
Provides NCTR leadership with opportunities to integrate research with other FDA Centers and develop collaborative food safety and protection projects.
Develops long-range research plans and goals, evaluates specific research proposals, and identifies budget and facility needs to support the FDA's food safety research needs.
Represents NCTR and the Division of Microbiology on Center and Agency-wide committees and working groups.
Provides additional information to the scientific community through timely reviews of scientific literature, preparation of book chapters, and edits related to food safety and the control of infectious diseases.
Provides leadership at NCTR in the areas of food safety and protection research and is involved in organizational and decision-making capabilities in the areas of food safety and food defense.

Qualifications
Basic Qualifications requirements for RS-0401:
Applicants must have successfully completed a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor or higher degree that includes a major field of study in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position or combination of education and experience. Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Basic Qualifications requirements for RS-0403:
Applicants must have successfully completed a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a
bachelor or higher degree that includes a major field of study in microbiology or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent or combination of education and experience courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
In addition to the basic qualifications requirements listed above, applicants must possess either a Ph.D., DVM, M.D. or other earned doctorate in a field related to the position to be filled. Specialized Experience: Ideal candidate must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade of GS-15 or equivalent level of responsibility leading a multi-disciplinary research organization and managing/directing a team of scientific researchers and technical support staff.
