Duties

Help

As a Hydrologic Technician within the Washington Water Science Center (WAWSC), some of your specific duties will include:

  • Uses resourcefulness to make stream discharge measurements, using the various techniques, equipment and protocols depending upon field conditions or other unforeseen circumstances.
  • Computes and checks surface or ground water records from field data where hydrologic conditions are stable.
  • Performs routine field measurements such as water temperature, specific conductance, pH, dissolved oxygen and alkalinity selecting the appropriate technique, protocol, and equipment.
  • Collects and processes a wide variety of samples modifying approaches as necessary in order to ensure the integrity of the data
  • Installs, maintains and services a variety of sensing, recording and communications equipment and instrumentation. Troubleshoots selected hydrologic instrumentation in the office.
  • Operates a government owned or leased vehicle as an incidental driver.

Above duties are for the GS-07 level. For the lower grade levels, the selectee will perform a wide range of tasks described in the above duties, but at a lower level of work designed to further develop and refine the knowledge and skills of the individual. Assignments will typically combine productive work with on-going training and instruction. Supervision received at the lower level will be closer with oversight and review being provided more frequently.

Physical Demands and Work Environment: Field work involves moderate or sometimes extreme exposure to rain, snow, cold/hot weather, rapidly running or icy streams and rivers, mosquitoes and working in bear country. Lifting and carrying of equipment up to 75 pounds when in the field.

Qualifications

GS-5: You must meet one of the following:

  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-4 level in the Federal service that is in or related to the duties of the position. Examples of GS-4 work include: 1) Making adjustments & minor repairs to water level recorders or equipment used in water investigations; 2) Following well-defined methods & designated formulas; computing, extracting, compiling, & presenting geological or hydrologic data in prescribed tabular or graphic form; 3) Computing mean daily gage heights from water stage record charts, editing record tapes, & making corrections based on field notes. For examples, work involved familiar conditions, concepts & methods; outlined objectives to be achieved without explicit instruction as to work methods. Assignments involving new, difficult or unfamiliar areas were given with specific guidance. Explicit instructions were provided for solving technical problems involving unfamiliar conditions. OR
  • You may substitute successful completion of a full 4 year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study in an appropriate field of science, engineering, construction, or industrial technology or that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses as listed in GS-4 above. OR
  • A combination of successful post-high school education & specialized experience may be used. Only progressive education in excess of the first 60 semester/90 quarter hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the requirement, assuming the education includes the appropriate number of directly related hours in any combination of courses listed in GS-4 above. GS-6: You must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-6 level:

  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-5 level in the Federal service that is in or related to the duties of this position. Examples of GS-5 work include: 1) Computing mean daily gage heights from water stage record charts, editing record tapes, & making corrections based on field observation notes; 2) Preparing maps showing well elevations & depth to water, hydrographs, profiles, and well locations. For examples, work involved some technical problems not previously encountered; problems involving concepts & methods for which guides & precedents existed, were resolved independently. General instructions to time allotted, expected time of completion, possible technical problems which may be encountered & approaches that may be used were provided. Other examples: 1) Installing, adjusting, inspecting, & servicing crest-stage indicators, well-recorders & instruments for the collection of ground/surface water data; & checking gage settings to ensure accuracy of the records obtained; 2) Making technical studies of hydrologic data collected & preparing material for publication; applying datum corrections to gage height records allowing for periods of ice effect, temperature variations & precipitation; and plotting hydrographs & analyzing differences in hydrographs with earlier records, & making necessary changes. For examples, routine assignments that involved familiar conditions, concepts, & methods; objectives to be achieved without explicit instruction as to work methods. Assignments involving new, difficult, or unfamiliar areas of work were given with more specific guidance. OR
  • You may substitute successful completion of 1 year of appropriate graduate level education (18 semester/27 quarter hours) in hydrology or other directly related field of study to the work of this position. OR
  • You may substitute a combination of appropriate specialized experience & appropriate graduate level education (as listed above) that is beyond the first 1/2 year of progressive graduate study to meet the requirement.

GS-7: You must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-7 level:

  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-6 level in the Federal service that is in or related to the duties of this position. Examples of GS-6 work include: 1) Installing, adjusting, inspecting, & servicing crest-stage indicators, well-recorders & other instruments for the collection of water data; & checking gage settings to ensure continuing accuracy of the records obtained from instruments; 2) Measuring stream discharge utilizing various devices; observing & noting conditions that may have a bearing on stage-discharge relationships; making & compiling observations of the fluctuations of ground water levels in designated wells; & collecting water samples for chemical analysis. For examples, assignments involved familiar conditions, concepts, & methods; outlined objectives to be achieved without explicit instruction as to work methods. Assignments involving new, difficult, or unfamiliar areas of work were given with specific guidance. Explicit instructions were provided for solving technical problems involving unfamiliar conditions. OR
  • You may substitute successful completion of 1 year of appropriate graduate level education (18 semester/27 quarter hours) in hydrology or other directly related field of study to the work of this position. OR
  • You may substitute a combination of appropriate specialized experience (as listed above) & appropriate graduate level education (as listed above) that is beyond the first 1/2 year of progressive graduate study to meet the qualification requirements.
GS-5 AND above: Specialized experience may include work as a technician/aid in engineering, earth, physical, or natural science, forestry, soil conservation, or surveying; trades or crafts work in maintenance/construction of facilities or equipment related to hydrology; drafting; or construction estimating if it equipped you with the knowledge, skills & abilities to perform the duties. You must meet all requirements by the closing date of the vacancy.
