Duties

Help
  • Conducting measurements of rivers, streams, and springs.
  • Sounding groundwater levies using either mechanical or electronic devices, maintaining stream gage stations.
  • Determine water quality by measuring pH, electrical conductivity, after temperature, dissolved oxygen, and bacterial analysis.
  • Quality control of field collection of water project data.
  • Conduct major maintenance and servicing of various types of groundwater level recorders, water sampling devices, stream flow meters, and various types of data loggers.
  • Produce written reports, instruction Memos and briefing papers.
  • Determine applicable Federal and State water rights laws to research water right claims.

Qualifications

For GS-07: One (1) year of specialized work experience equivalent to the GS-06 level. Examples of specialized experience may include collecting and compiling watershed data using current techniques, methods and procedures; conducting activities related to water monitoring; and assisting in the evaluation and development of watershed project plans and project assessment; OR successful completion of one year (27 quarter or 18 semester hours) of graduate study directly related to the work of the position such as engineering, industrial technology, construction drafting, surveying, physical science, biology, or mathematics; OR a combination of experience and education to meet the total experience.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.

Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade requirement in accordance with 5 CFR 300.604. If you are a current Federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must have completed a minimum of 52 weeks at the next lower grade level.

Physical Demands: Physical requirements include alertness to ensure a high degree of accuracy in office and field assignments, to produce reliable and repeatable data. The incumbent must have the ability to work alone and out-of-doors, in isolated locations during normal field assignment weather. The incumbent must periodically provide accurate information under rigid time constraints. Travel, including overnight travel, to other offices and remote field locations. Use of four-wheel drive vehicles, UTV's and other methods of field transportation may be required. Walking of long distances, up to five miles, over rough terrain may occasionally be required. The work may also require physically carrying hydrological equipment, 25 to 50 pounds, in a field situation while on foot.

Work Environment: The work to be performed will consist of approximately 25% office work and 75% field work. Field work in the desert southwest may involve adverse conditions such as extreme temperatures, and rough and rocky terrain. Field conditions can vary from very cold, below freezing, to extremely hot, in excess of 100 degrees.

Education

This position falls under the Group Coverage Qualification Standard for Technical and Medical Support Positions.

This position allows for education to be substituted for specialized experience (see qualification section for education requirements). If using education to qualify - You MUST submit a copy of ALL your college transcripts or a list of ALL college courses that include hours and grades from an accredited U.S. college/university. Upon selection, official transcripts must be received prior to appointment. If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

Relocation/Recruitment Incentive: This position is offering a Relocation/Recruitment Incentive, 10% of the annual salary. To be eligible for a Relocation Incentive, you must be a current Federal Employee and the selectee must be employed with the Federal Government and the selectees current duty location is more than 50 miles from the duty location of this position. To be eligible for a Recruitment Incentive, selectee must not be employed by the Federal Government.

The official worksite for the selectee is the duty station identified in this vacancy announcement. The selectee will typically report to this duty location on a regular and recurring weekly basis. The selectee may be allowed to telework within the local commuting area with supervisor approval.
