Duties

  • Works with cross-functional teams to ensure that exhibitions reflect the philosophy and mission of NMAI, and that information is organized so that exhibition content is thematically and visually coherent as well as easily understood by, and accessible to, a broad range of audiences.
  • Develops and manages the exhibition production and installation process, including approaches, schedules, and cost estimates for major exhibits, so that exhibitions meet NMAI, SI, and museum industry standards.
  • Works with museum management and cross-functional teams to see that the following project elements are defined and maintained: scope, schedule, budget, goals, educational objectives, roles, responsibilities, and ground rules for operations and decision-making.
  • Serves as the central point of contact for all phases of project planning and implementation, including preparation of documentation for review by senior management.
  • Regularly communicates project status to team members and senior managers.
  • Ensures that exhibitions clearly and accurately reflect the philosophy and mission of the NMAI.

Qualifications

Specialized Experience: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the occupation. Applicants who have the 1 year of appropriate specialized experience, are not required to have general experience, education above the high school level, or any additional specialized experience to meet the minimum qualification requirements.

For this position at the GS-12 level, applicants must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, GS-11, in the Federal Service or equivalent.

For this position, specialized experience is defined as:

GS-12:  Experience using Native knowledge as a primary resource to manage, plan, and develop museum exhibitions from the conceptual phase through design, production, and installation, ensuring that projects are brought to completion within scope, schedule, and budget.

How you will be evaluated

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Your application will be evaluated first for the basic qualifications described above. The applications that meet the basic qualifications will be evaluated further against the following criteria:

  1. Knowledge of a wide range of concepts, principles, and practices of museum exhibition functions, operations, and programs.
  2. Knowledge of all components of exhibit project development and production necessary to assure the quality of presentation, including research, design, construction, fabrication, evaluation, conservation, registration, media, interactives, object list preparation, security, accessibility, and public relations.
  3. Knowledge of project management systems, methods, and techniques in order to plan, manage, and implement assigned projects to include developing project goals, schedules, milestones, budgets, and spending plans.
  4. Ability to communicate ideas effectively through written materials.
  5. Ability to communicate ideas effectively through verbal presentations.
  6. Knowledge of Native American tribal history, customs and culture in order to provide substantive support for exhibits.​

Applicants who meet or exceed minimum qualifications will be assigned to one of three category groups based on job-related criteria:

Best Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and excels in most of the job related competencies above.

Better Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and satisfies most of the job related competencies above.

Good Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements, but does not satisfy most of the job related competencies above to a substantive degree.

This category rating process does not add veterans' preference points or apply the "rule of three", but protects the rights of veterans by placing them ahead of non-preference eligibles within each category. A selecting official may make selections from the highest quality category (Best Category) provided no preference eligible in that category is passed over to select a non-preference eligible in that category unless the requirements of 5 U.S.C. 3317(b) or 3318(b) are satisfied.
