Duties

Help
  • Performs clinical research protocol development, implementation, and management in specialized scientific disciplines.
  • Provides education about specific protocols and process changes to clinical staff caring for participants on clinical trials and clinical research studies.
  • Collaborates with statisticians, physicians, clinical nursing staff, and other staff to identify ways to continually improve the integrity of data collection and analysis.
  • Participates in the initial and ongoing assessment of study participant eligibility for a clinical trial and clinical research study, including documentation of criteria specified in the protocol.
  • Uses the nursing process to identify participant care needs in the context of the study design and beyond the clinical trial or research study requirements and collaborate with other members of the healthcare team to ensure participant safety.
  • Serves as a resource for research team and provides required education for research participant and family on research study participants, participants current clinical condition, and/or disease process.
  • Collaborates in the provision of and provides direct nursing care for research participants, such as administering research interventions, specimen collection, follow-up calls, etc.

Qualifications

In order to meet the Basic Qualification Requirements for a Nurse (Research Specialist), GS-0610, you must have:

  • A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program. Note: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools; AND
  • Passed the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN); AND
  • Possess a current, active, full and unrestricted license, or registration as a professional nurse from a state, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
In addition, to qualify for a Nurse (Research Specialist) position at the GS-12 level, you must have at least 1 year of specialized professional research nursing experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: providing specialized nursing care in a clinical research environment; participating in clinical research protocol development and implementation; collecting participant data according to protocol specifications in a research environment; producing clinical data reports for clinical use and treatment decision-making; educating and counseling participants and their families on the research process such as patient eligibility and registration, supportive care, post-study evaluation, and informed consent.
