Duties

  • Provides leadership, support, mentoring and coaching for up to four paid staff plus contractors and up to 40 volunteers.
  • Delivers high-quality educational programming for children, students and family audiences while bringing a Native perspective to all visitor programs, tours and workshops. S/he presents programs about American Indians primarily for children and school audiences in support of the museum’s Native Knowledge 360° national education Initiative.
  • Makes presentations for daily programs and special events such as VIP tours, workshops, large-scale programs and hands-on programs, both to model and test teaching strategies.
  • Contributes to the management of the inventory and handling collections of the Office of Interpretation and the IAC. Work includes proper care and maintenance of the objects and shelving/storage and maintenance of teaching collection records and database. Incumbent assists in developing the handling and prop collections.

Requires evening, weekend and holiday work.

Requires standing for up to 5 hours per day and lifting objects up to 20 lbs.

Qualifications

Specialized Experience: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the occupation. Applicants who have the 1 year of appropriate specialized experience, are not required to have general experience, education above the high school level, or any additional specialized experience to meet the minimum qualification requirements.

For this position at the GS-09 level, applicants must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, GS-07, in the Federal Service or equivalent.

For this position, specialized experience is defined as:

GS-09:  experience presenting Native American educational information on a regular basis to children, students and family audiences in a museum, cultural, educational or historical organization.

OR; 

2 full academic years of progressively higher level graduate education or master's or equivalent graduate degree related to the position; 

OR;

Education

Education can be used to substitute specialized experience for this position at the GS-09 level.  At the GS-09 level applicant can substitute one year of specialized experience with 2 full academic years of progressively higher level graduate education or master's or equivalent graduate degree related to the position; OR Equivalent combinations of education and experience.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Your application will be evaluated first for the basic qualifications described above. The applications that meet the basic qualifications will be evaluated further against the following criteria:

  1. Ability to lead others on a team without supervising them.
  2. Skill in synchronous and asynchronous education methods and materials.
  3. Skill in working with persons who are of all ages but covering the same subjects in an age-appropriate fashion.  
  4. Knowledge of ​Native American history, social and material culture, religion and contemporary life to properly answer content questions.  ​

Applicants who meet or exceed minimum qualifications will be assigned to one of three category groups based on job-related criteria:

Best Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and excels in most of the job related competencies above.

Better Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and satisfies most of the job related competencies above.

Good Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements, but does not satisfy most of the job related competencies above to a substantive degree.

This category rating process does not add veterans' preference points or apply the "rule of three", but protects the rights of veterans by placing them ahead of non-preference eligibles within each category. A selecting official may make selections from the highest quality category (Best Category) provided no preference eligible in that category is passed over to select a non-preference eligible in that category unless the requirements of 5 U.S.C. 3317(b) or 3318(b) are satisfied. Preference eligibles who meet minimum qualification requirements and who have a compensable service-connected disability of at least 10 percent must be listed in the highest quality category, except when the position being filled is scientific or professional at the GS-9 grade level or higher.
