Help

This is an open continuous announcement. Applications will be reviewed/referred on a bi-weekly basis until the position is filled.

The Psychiatry Advanced Practice Nurse (APRN) is responsible for the care/administrative needs of mental health patients in both the inpatient/outpatient settings. They are a coordinator between the attending physician & the other team members to include Physician Assistants & PMH NPs, psychologists, social workers, psychotherapists, LMFTs, LPCs, addiction therapists & other clinic personnel.

Duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • The evaluation of current psychiatric and medical problems administrative assistance, quality assurance and educational support.
  • Provide medical care and evaluation for both psychiatry inpatients and outpatients in the mental health wards and/or outpatient clinics.
  • Provide mental mental health education/counseling and brief therapy of patients and their families.
  • Holding scheduled appointments for outpatients to observe and record patients' medical progress, and notify the collaborating physician of significant changes.
  • Participates in quality assurance program with a multi-disciplinary group-developing criterion for administrative goals in the clinic.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
    • OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)
    • OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
Preferred Experience: Preferred experience includes but is not limited to:
  • Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP).
  • Current Prescriptive Authority in the State of Arkansas.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of successful Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) Nursing Experience/Clinical Practice.
  • Certification as a Family, Adult/Acute or Adult/Gerontology/Acute Nurse Practitioner from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
  • Communicate orally and in writing.
  • Collaborate with and direct multidisciplinary teams in previous assignments.
  • Knowledge of computer systems and standard software programs.
  • Manage complex systems, with advanced organizational skills.
  • Perform psychiatric evaluations for a diverse population, including geriatric and post-deployment combat Veterans, who are mentally ill and who may have psychosocial issues such as homelessness, unemployment, or a poor family support network.
  • Provide a full range of therapeutic interventions including diagnostic assessments, medication evaluation and management, suicide risk assessments, crisis intervention, psychotherapy, and overall care of patients with psychiatric disorders.
  • Incorporate alternative encounter modalities into clinical care. Modalities for patient care include face-to-face, video teleconference, and telephone calls as clinically appropriate.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) regulations/policies/procedures, current Joint Commission (JC) Standards, Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), and other current internal and external accrediting body standards.
  • Demonstrate the ability to respond in a positive manner with homeless/mentally ill/Geri-Psychiatric/Acute Veterans.
  • Participates in team meetings and collaborates with interdisciplinary team members to enhance coordination of comprehensive patient care.
  • Orders diagnostic tests and consultations. Discriminates between normal and abnormal findings and makes appropriate treatment decisions.
Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
  • Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience.

Physical Requirements: Light lifting, light carrying, reaching above shoulders, walking, use of fingers/hands, near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4, far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other, and hearing (aid permitted).
